Growing Climbing Roses - My Easy Guide

By Kor Rassad

No rose garden is truly perfect without including climbing roses into the mix of rose species. Climbing roses, also recognized as pillars, ramblers, trailing roses, and everblooming roses depending on how they grow are not considered true vines. They don't grow their own support structures to hold onto surfaces. But they are the ideal decoration to grace any arch, wall or any other structure in and around any garden.

Because climbing roses do not have the capabilities to hold onto structures like vines do, they need help from us. Grower can loosely tie the plant to a structure or wind it through the structure. Some types of structures you can grow climbing roses on are trellis , arbors, fences, sheds, columns, walls or virtually any other big, solid structures. Climbing roses that are educated to grow laterally instead of vertically often produce more blossoms. Vertically trained climbing roses will produce little spines along their main stem or canes which will develop blooms. Besides the direction they grow, growing climbing roses is not unlike growing other types of rose plants. Climbing roses need about 6 to 7 hours of direct unfiltered sunshine a day. Even climbing roses that are said to do good in the part shade still need about four to five hours of direct sunshine a day.

When projecting to grow climbing roses in your garden, take into consideration the elevation or distance that these types of roses will grow to. Some varieties of climbing roses can grow to be around 30 feet in height. Other species can grow to be seven feet in height. Can the structure that you are planning to grow them on support this type of plant? The height of the plant will also depend on the type of climate you get in your country. Another thing to deliberate is which type of climbing rose is going to suit your garden. Some varieties of climbing roses are everbloomers which means that they bloom all throughout the growing season. Other varieties are spring bloomers meaning they only bloom in the spring.

One great difference between climbing roses and different species of rose plants is that they ask very little pruning. There is no need to trim the plant for the first 2 years. If climbing roses are pruned each year like other rose plants, the opposite will happen to the climbers; they will develop less flowers. Owners can get away with pruning their climbing roses every three or four years. Even then, clipping comprises of removing small canes and old or less vigorous canes at the bottom of the plant. Vigorous young canes are encouraged to grow and to become long and flexible. Owners will get an easier time training these canes through and onto structures.

The thing to remember with climbing roses is that you must be patient. They may require a little while to get established and start flowering right after they are planted. But, when they do become established, the aroma and the beauty of their colors are well worth the wait.

Butterfly Iris New Hybrids, Varieties And Colors

By Thomas Fryd

The Spuria iris, long relegated to the neglected back of the perennial border, emerged as the glamorous "Butterfly Iris" in the 1950's with development of new hybrids. The familiar white, blue, or yellow spurias, dependable and hardy though they were, were not far removed from the wild Species. Almost unnoticed, a few breeders patiently worked for the development of new varieties, added new colors, form, and true branching.

For those who are not familiar with the butterfly (spuria) iris, here is a brief description of the species: The spuria iris is one of the apogon (beardless) irises native to the northern and eastern hemispheres. Because its seeds are enclosed in an air filled parchment like membrane which permits them to float, they have migrated to river mouths and along shore lines. In color, the wild species are blue, white, or yellow, all with a yellow signal patch.

Some of the blue species have slightly purplish tones and a subspecies whose right to membership in this group is often questioned is the wine-colored dwarf "graminea." The flower resembles that of the Dutch iris but the average height is three feet and the stalks carry three or four pairs of buds, often opening a flower of each pair at once.

Spuria irises bloom after (in the North) or with (in the South) the bearded iris. The large size of the flowers (up to seven inches in diameter), height of the sturdy stalks, number, heavy substance, and keeping ability of the flowers make them unsurpassed for florists or flower arrangers use.

They like, but do not demand, full sun, good drainage, and plenty of food and water with a good garden soil to improve there growth. After they bloom they prefer to bake through the summer months, refusing to produce good bloom or increase next season without this summer dormancy. Mature rhizomes are temperamental about being moved and should be transplanted during their summer dormancy or when new growth begins in the fall. If moved at the wrong time and not place in a better garden soil they will sulk for a year or two. The foliage dies back after being lifted unless the roots are undisturbed by moving a ball of soil with them.

Like all members of the iris family, butterfly irises are subject to virus and bacterial (rot) infections. Good cultural practice and attention to their requirements make control of these factors easier than other iris species.

Be With Nature By The Wild Flower Gardens

By Kent Higgins

A garden of wild flowers can transform a small area of a garden to one beaming with color. Here are a few selections to let nature bring on the color.

The light blue, bell-shaped blossoms of the Greek valerian or Jacobs ladder (Polemonium reptans) are a pleasing addition to the shaded garden or a spot with some sun. The plants I have observed grow eight to 12 inches high though it is reported to grow somewhat higher. As a boy I looked for it in April or May and knew it as the other bluebell. Actually the name bluebell means very little unless we know something of the background of the individual using it.

The Scotchman's bluebell is a campanula, while the bluebell of English poetry is really a hyacinth. The wild flower commonly called a bluebell in this country is known botanically as Mertensia virginica. Also called the Virginia cowslip, it is an old favorite that is easily grown if given semi-shade and a good deep garden loam. In the wild it is frequently found in rich, moist soil along streams. It blooms in May.

A happy accident in our garden last season gave us the combination of wild columbine (Aquilegia canadensis) and coral honeysuckle (Lonicera sempervirens). The honeysuckle was growing on our garden fence with the columbine in front of it. The combination of colors was most pleasing. Actually, the coral honeysuckle is found in the wild only as it has escaped from cultivation. Both plants in our garden are in part shade though both get the mid-day sun. They both bloom in late April or May. The columbine with its scarlet and gold blossoms is one of our loveliest flowers. Easily identified by its resemblance to the cultivated columbine, it is frequently found clinging to a rocky bluff. It reseeds itself readily in the garden.

The last snow bank has hardly disappeared in early spring until we are gladdened by the sight of a drift of bloodroot with its ephemeral white blossoms. In the splendid book on "Wild Flowers of Missouri" it makes reference to the flower buds as being "wrapped in a scalloped graygreen leaf, like a blanketed papoose. Thus protected, it is "pushed up to the sunlight." Though frequently found in open wood, the bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis) adapts itself to varying situations. It is easily grown either from seeds or divisions of the fleshy roots. Though the petals fall quickly, the ileaves hold interest through most of the season.

Few wild flowers have the dainty grace of Dutchman's breeches. The low cluster of finely cut leaves surmounted by a flower stalk, six or eight inches high, strung with four to six or possibly eight delicate, somewhat heart-shaped white flowers delight the nature lover in his April or May woodland walks.

Other names that admirers have bestowed on this little flower are bachelors kitten, little boys breeches, butterfiy banners. and soldiers caps. The botanical name is Dicentra cucullaria.

Given good drainage and partial shade such as we find in open woods, Dutchmans breeches is easily grown in good garden soil well supplied with leaf mold. It is frequently found growing in rock crevices mostly in a river rock landscape where the roots may penetrate to rich cool soil formed from the accumulation of decayed leaves. In such a location like the river rock landscape, the lichen covered stones make a perfect foil for this airy little wildling.

It grows from a tuber and is easily transplanted when dormant.

The pleasures of wild flower gardening are as real and satisfying as they are intangible and indescribable. To the wild flower lover a clump of bloodroot in an appropriate setting has an appeal equal to that of a good piece of art on canvas.

What The Wind Does For You

By Brit Xavier

When one considers the general concern nowadays about the state of the environment, it isn't surprising that many people are now looking for an alternative means of powering their homes and businesses. Even though there are numerous companies investing in solar energy, one simply cannot overlook the fact that wind power has been in use in various forms for over 100 years. From the windmills of yesteryear to present day wind farms, the phenomenal power of the wind is now being used not only by businesses, but also for home use.

While the wind is not always plentiful or abundant if you have at least a breeze of more than ten MPH, it's enough to power some low voltage turbines. You can expect to cut your electricity bill by 50-90%, with some average power bills ranging from $8-$15 for most of the year. Where it's cooler and an air conditioning unit is used less often or not at all, this could be your electricity bill throughout the year.

In the United States, the average household uses about 9,000kWh during the course of a year, which means they use more or less 780 kilowatt hours per month. Even a wind turbine which only has a five to fifteen kilowatt capacity is able to reduce your monthly electricity bill considerably.

Given the very nature of wind turbines, one should realize that it's necessary to have an adequate amount of space. In fact, one should ideally have approximately an acre of land. Remember, even small wind turbines which are mounted on towers measuring a foot or less, also require a suitable amount of space.

If you don't have an average wind speed of more than 10mph, then a wind turbine will not work for you. However, there are at least 47 states where wind powered homes are found, with the majority being in areas of being in the Northeast and Midwest.

Apart from the financial savings you stand to gain, installing a wind generator will also benefit the environment in many ways. For example, wind generators help to reduce noise pollution, just as they help to reduce the tremendous burden placed on the national power grids. Furthermore, utility companies may be willing to pay you for any excess power produced which you don't use. Once you start to see your electric meter spinning backwards, you'll know that your wind turbine is not only helping to save the planet, but it's also supplying electricity to the grid, for which you'll be paid.

It's hardly surprising that one can now see wind farms springing up everywhere considering that many companies are realizing just how much profit there is to be made. In fact, many farmers today are also starting to focus on wind power as a reliable source of income.

Irrespective of what changes you make, be it that you start turning off the lights when not in use, or be it that you decide to start using a wind generator, it is absolutely vital that we all begin making some changes in order to preserve this wonderful planet.

21 Your Guide to an Effective Real Estate Marketing: The Importance of P.S. in Your Copy

By M. B. Bradley

P.S. Have you ever noticed that every sales letter ends with a P.S.? It's true. And there's good reason why.

If your latest real estate postcard mailing doesn't have a P.S. on them, you can simply put a P.S. and leave every detail in your copy as they were.

The next step would be the message you want to include in your P.S. It is important that your message will be memorable to your prospect. You can simply include your phone number or just a gist about your offer. Keep in mind that your customer will be moved to reply if they read anything that catches their attention.

Why is the P.S. such a fundamental fixture in the copywriting world? Simply because it works, it is also pure and simple. Statistics show that after the headline of your copy, your reader will immediately turn to see who has sent the mailing. And in the process, the reader then reads the P.S. This means that if you don't use a P.S. you're missing out on a vital selling opportunity.

Therefore, not having a P.S. in your real estate direct marketing materials is like not having a business card. You are making a decision, not to take advantage of all the marketing opportunities that are open to you.

How do you make your P.S. more productive?

First, make sure that your P.S. has an interesting and appealing introduction. Your prospects would normally read the headline of your P.S. first. You must grab their attention at once so they will continue reading the content of your P.S.

It is also important to make the content of your P.S. short but substantial. Make sure to boost the content with powerful words but avoid making it long. Prospects hate it when your P.S. contains too many sentences.

Just as you spend a good deal of time perfecting the headline of your mailing, you need to spend some time, effort and thought, deciding what your P.S. message says. While it can be anything you deem appropriate, urgent and necessary, you do need to say it with flare. So don't hurriedly write this.

Another effective method to writing your real estate postcard marketing copy is to first write the beginning of your copy (the headline) then the end (the P.S.) before tackling the middle. This helps in constructing a tight and sexy real estate marketing copy!

Rose Planting

By Kor Rassad

Planting a rose plant goes beyond how deep the hole should be and if plant food should be utilized now or later. The first and most fundamental measure in rose planting that should not be forgotten is picking the positioning of where you are going to plant your roses. It is as true in planting as it is in real estate; location, location, location. There are different things that are required to be studied when picking out a position for our rose plants.

Will the place you care selecting to plant your roses get plenty sunlight? The majority of rose species should get at least six hours of direct, unfiltered sunlight a day. Yet rose plants that are shade tolerant need about four to six hours of direct sunshine to do well.

Is the ground where you project to plant your roses healthy? Roses are hungry eaters and demand to have nutritious soil. They do not like soil that has too much clay or too much sand. A quick test you can do with your soil to find out if it has too much clay or sand is to clump it in your hand. If the soil holds the mold and does not fall apart easily, it has too much clay. If the soil crumbles too easily and does not hold the mold, it has too much sand. Good soil should maintain the mold in your hand but crumble easily. The soil should also not be too acidic, contain too much limestone or too much chalk.

And lastly, is the site where you are going to plant your rose plant too near to trees or other plants? There are many another trees and other larger plants that will extract water and nutrients from the ground from roots that extend far beyond their drip line. If you see a lot of roots where you are digging your hole for your rose bush, most likely these roots are going to make a problem for your plant. There are some climbing rose and some shrubs that are an exception but most rose plants only like to be mixed with other roses or other non-invasive plants.

Now that you have the perfect location for your rose plant, you can consider the basics such as how deep the hole should be. You will need to dig a hole that is slightly larger than the size of the pot the plant is in or root system of the plant. The depth of the hole depends on the climate that you live in. Colder regions need to plant their roses somewhat deeper. It is a good idea to talk to other rose growers in the area as to which is the right depth for you. Depths may be different for lots of different people but, everyone can benefit from loosening the soil at the bottom of the hole.

You can also set some compost in the bottom of the hole plus a scatter of bone meal which is a source of Phosphorus and is slow working and advances healthy root development. Spread out the roots slightly after you place the plant into the hole. Fill Again the hole and make sure that the soil settles around the roots. Water the roots before you cover them with the last couple of inches of soil. And finally place the last of the soil back into the hole and firm the soil slightly. You can water the plant at this step also.

Easy Baby Nursery Decor Ideas

By Stephanie McLain

There are so many different things to consider when designing babys room. What colors should I use? What theme should I go with? What safety considerations should I keep in mind? Its enough to drive a person crazy. In this article my aim is to steer you on a path away from insanity on your way to a vibrant babys lounge that you can brag to all your friends about. When designing a babys room the most important things you should focus on are choosing your colors, deciding on a theme, and baby proofing.

Colors, colors, colors. It all starts with the colors. With the advancement of color psychology, science has shown that soft colors are the best route to go for your little guy. Remember, baby is new to this whole big place full of different sites, sounds, and touch. The best thing for your baby is to provide soft colors that will sooth and calm baby as he ventures into this big world of ours. Now I'm not saying its all gotta be peaches and creams. You can use bold and exciting, but just remember to use it as an accent around the baby nursery in things like the trim or design patterns on fabric.

Colors may have psychological advantages and disadvantages to baby's mind and development. We want to use colors that will enhance baby's senses instead of confusing them. Now this may sound like over kill, but why make things difficult for the little tike. Remember, baby is a sponge soaking in everything around. Let's look at two colors and what their impact may be on baby's mind.

Black may not be a color you want to include in your nursery decor. It symbolizes authority and power and is a color that implies submission. This in my opinion is an adult color and should not be forced upon baby. Bottom line, I would stay away from black.

White is a wonderful color to use in your baby nursery decor. White symbolizes purity and innocence. What better way to represent a new life on earth? The added bonus of white is that it is a neutral color and goes with everything.

When deciding on a theme think of it as the first learning experience that you want to give your baby. After all, this room is to help baby to learn, develop, and grow so keep that in mind when deciding on what theme fits best for baby and not you. Keep your personal likes and dislikes at bay and save them for decorating your master bedroom. A good rule of thumb to use is if you find something that is cool or just right for you, find something one step behind in simplicity so baby's brain is not warped into overdrive from day one. You can always build up to your ideal theme as baby grows. Just don't rush it. Some good themes to kick start your baby nursery are animal shapes, silly frogs, beautiful simple butterflies, or good ole fashion shapes and colorful dots.

With so many terrible news articles out there with unfortunate accidents that occur in baby's room, its a wonder why safety is not a number one priority when creating baby's nursery. Throughout your baby nursery decorating adventure look for thinks like small items on themes that baby could choke on like buttons and beads. Look for baby furniture with safety feature like a crib that locks firmly and securely. And finally, prep the room with electrical outlet plugs so baby's first shock is only the amazing room you have prepared. Also it is a good idea to invest in a baby monitor so you can hear how baby is doing at all times. Safety first will keep you from being sorry last.

Now you have a great head start and are armed with some things to consider when designing babys room. You know to pick your colors first: three is good and any more than four and youre your going too far. Pick themes that are simple and keep baby in mind. And finally, remember to keep safety always on the back of your mind when doing your baby nursery decor.

Solar Garden Lights - a Modern Way to Light up Your Garden

By John Monsholi

Solar garden lights are unique garden lamps, powered by natural solar energy. Solar garden lights do not require wiring, and thus there is no threat of anyone in your garden (i.e., pets, children, or, yourself) getting an electric shock. The lights help you save on the cost of electric, and are very easy to install.

Sunshine is the source of all of the natural energy on earth. Solar garden lights utilize the energy of the sun, free of charge, to emit light. The lights are made of special cells, generating electricity when exposed to the sun. Solar cells, a regular rechargeable battery and an LED special light emitting diode is all that is needed for these lights to shine, when an electric current goes through it.

Solar garden lights usually emit a moderate amount of light for a modest amount of time. However, due to constantly improving technology, the lights keep getting better, shining brighter and longer.

Advantages of solar garden lights include:

1. The lights are extremely easy to set up. When needed, solar garden lights can be also moved with the same ease. These lights can be placed anywhere throughout your garden, during the daytime hours in which there is sun.

2. Solar garden lights are much safer than regular lighting, since they operate with a very low voltage.

3. Solar garden lights are very energy efficient. They are powered by DC (direct current) electricity, i.e. common batteries being charged by the sun and thus giving electricity for the lights to shine. They allow you to save on electricity and fossil fuel costs.

4. Most of the solar garden lights come with a built in photo sensors, which make the lights go on and off according to if there is sunshine or if there isn't. At the same time, most of the lights have an on and off button for maximum convenience.

5. The lights do not produce pollutants, which are common for the electricity generating utilities.

6. Solar garden lights will create a unique pleasant ambiance in any garden. The lights are very stylish, nice-looking and compact.

7. Merely four hours of a direct exposure to the sun will provide your garden with up to nine hours of light in the evening. Good solar garden lights are also capable of shining even during the months with limited sunshine, such as autumn and winter.

8. One of the most common complaints of homeowners is that the wires in their garden get damaged, for example, by animals. Solar garden lights eliminate this problem due to not requiring any wires or electric sockets.

Before purchasing solar garden lights for your landscaping, please note the following:

1. Make sure that the spike of the lights, which goes into the ground, is either made of a durable plastic or is made of metal.

2. Some lights are meant for nice appearance rather than for bright light, and they may just glow instead of emitting a bright light. Other lights may be short lived in the evening. If you are looking for brighter solar garden lights, which would emit light for many hours, you should look for lights with a larger area of solar cells and higher capacity batteries. The light intensity varies from one type of light to another.

3. Ensure that the solar garden lights of your choice are waterproof and weatherproof. For example, if the water leaks through the solar panel of the lights, the lights may stop working.

4. You should also try to place your solar garden lights, where there is no shadow cast in your garden. Note that on the overcast days, the lights will not shine for so long and as bright as on bright sunny days.

5. In case the lights do not go on, you should look for one of the following: batteries leaking fluid, poor quality batteries, rusty batteries, or corroded battery terminals.

6. For most convenience, opt for solar garden lights that come with an on and off button.

The bottom line

Solar garden lights are a big step forward in the modern technological development. The lights help create a garden with an extremely pleasant and relaxing ambiance, as well as they are cost efficient and environmentally friendly. Solar garden lights are one solution to consider for any garden enthusiast.

Identifying Black Mold

By Matt Armstrong

If your home has had a problem with dampness, and If you are experiencing symptoms such as chronic fatigue, irritation of the eyes or mouth, sneezing, rashes or continuous coughing, there is a great chance that you are being exposed to black mold in your home. In people with allergies to black mold, symptoms can become extreme and they may experience reactions such as bleeding in the lungs, diarrhea, far worse.

The first thing you should do to determine if your home has black mold, is to simply look for it. You can identify black mold by looking for a greenish black smear that can grow on things such as carpets, walls, insulation, and shower curtains. This mold, which is known as Strachybotrys chartarum, or Strachybotrys atra, is said to be the cause of forty different kinds of lung disorders.

Mold simply just occurs in the home. One cannot completely sterilize their home, and trying to do so, may cause far worse issues than the black mold. Keep in mind that most black molds are benign. However do not let them live in your home, but deal with them when you see them, and look for them if you experience symptoms associated with black mold.

Black mold requires a moisture-rich environment, and food to live. What this means is that black mold can occur where there is damp wood, carpets, and even beneath wallpaper. It can also appear in wall paneling, cardboard, ceiling tiles, and anything else that is not glass, ceramic, or metal.

Once you find the culprit, you need to figure out how extensive it is. If it's something you can throw away, chuck it. It's not worth the problem. If you can't throw it away, use a solution of about one cup of bleach to a gallon of water, and a tablespoon of dish soap or baking soda. Slosh the mixture over the mold, let it saturate for about 15 minutes, and then wipe it up. Then thoroughly dry the area, and if possible, use a dehumidifier.

Once you've dealt with a spot of black mold, take the usual precautions: Keep humidity down, keep the bathroom and kitchen (the primary source of moisture) well ventilated, and clean thoroughly with a bleach solution in those areas.

Sadly, black mold in carpeting or in the insulation on walls is not remedied with bleach, and usually requires you to throw it out and replace it. If the black mold is reoccurring, the best idea is to call a building inspector, and have them advise you on cleaning contractors or building contractors.

Black mold in the home can potentially be a big problem. Households with children and elderly people with asthma and people with weak immune systems are typically prone to experiencing the most severe reactions.

Points To Consider Before Buying A Lawn Mower

By James Beckman

There are many things you think about first before buying a lawn mower. Not everything is created equal, so to speak. The same adage holds true for lawn mowers. Not all models of lawn mowers parades the same features and designed for the same amount of work or produce the same output in a given time.

Reliability, durability and efficiency are some of the things your lawn mower should provide if you intend to buy one, or any other home equipment for that matter. A lawn mower is a huge investment, therefore being picky is somewhat a necessary trait. It might be a bit difficult to make a final decision on which lawn mower to buy, but if you pick the right one, then its all worth it.

One thing you need to keep it mind is how big is your lawn area. The size of your lawn affects the performance of your lawn mower. If you have a big lawn, tyr checking those commercial lawn mowers. they may be expensive than most models, but they are faster and perform better at any rate than most other models.

There are different types of lawn mowers that can really fit into the way you are living. There are those walk-behind models and the rider type. As the name suggests, the first type requires you to steer the machine with you walking after it, very ideal for those who really enjoy mowing and see this activity as a form of physical fitness. On the other hand, ride-on lawn mowers are perfect for those who enjoy mowing but have problems with walking or prefer to just relax while maintaining their lawns.

Power is also a factor worth considering. Most lawn mowers run on gas. But there are many models out there that boast of energy efficient systems and do not require fuel. These environment-friendly lawn mowers utilize alternative forms of energies such as solar cells and rechargeable batteries. If you want to perfect your lawn while doing your ecological duty, this is one way to do it.

When it comes to money, you just have to remember that as long as you can afford to buy it and other expenses such as repairs and maintenance, then you are in the right path. Money does matter. If you really want to get the best of your money, go for something you can afford and that would provide you with optimum performance at the same time.. Ultimately, that's all there is to it.

Another disadvantage of flat screen plasma TVs is an increase in power consumption and resulting he generation when compared to other flat screen technologies. Whether you're buying parts to repair your lawn mower or installing a new front door, there are probably some things you can buy on the web for less cash than you'd expect. Even better, if you invest a little time you can definitely buy more home improvement supplies with less cash being taken out of your pocket. Here are some tips and tricks for buying home improvement items online:

Don't always take the first deal: If you're searching for something be sure to shop at several different web sites to find the best overall deal. Compare shipping costs, return policies and other details to make sure you're getting what you really want for the price you want.

Great Ideas for Gardening Vegetables in the Fall

By Dave Truman

When the majority of people think of vegetable gardening, they instantly associate it with planting seeds in the spring and then harvesting the rewards in autumn. This does not mean, however, that gardening vegetables in the fall is not an option, too. Some plants are quite well disposed for being gardened during the fall.

Just because the weather is getting cooler doesn't mean you have pack up the gardening tools for the year. Here are some fall gardening ideas for those who want to keep the fresh veggies rolling in.

Things To Consider

Research is the essential first step when it comes to fall gardening. Learning more about the weather patterns in your local area during the fall is important, as is finding out when the average first frost is in your zone. Zones were determined be gardeners in an effort to categorize which plants can be grown in which parts of the country. Plants receive a rating based off of which zones they are best suited for.

You can easily find out what zone you live in by looking online for growing zone maps. These sites may also have suggestions for what types of plants are recommended for each zone. This will be important information for you to have as not all vegetables will grow well in every zone, especially in the fall. Some of the best vegetables for fall gardening include beets, broccoli, lettuce, carrots, cabbage, onions, and radishes among others.

Making Plans for Your Fall Garden

The timing must be right for your fall garden to turn out well. This timing includes making sure that you plant your vegetable seeds early enough for them to be able to mature before the first frost comes and ruins them. In order to calculate this properly, check the maturation time of the vegetables you are going to plant. This should appear on the seed packets you use. Then, add twenty one days to that figure. The other figure you need is you growing zone's estimated first frost date.

Then, take that number, and count back from the first frost date to determine your planting date. One problem you might run into is that some cool weather seeds will not germinate well in the hot weather of summer. In this case, start your plants inside, and then move them outside after about 30 days.

Bedroom Designs - The Feng Shui Way

By Kelly Kim

A great way to smarten up your bedroom is not just to do it with style and comfort in mind. How about a dose of good luck for you? A Feng Shui -stimulated bedroom design can bring in all the optimistic energy you need so that when you wake up in the morning, you are in precisely the right mood to take on another day of life's joys and challenges. And when you retire back into it, you'll have all those good vibes for a nice long and sleepy night. Next morning, you're all fresh and revived. Sounds like a perfect idea.

According to Feng Shui, the position of the bed is imperative in the course of energy into your bedroom. Though it matters what direction your headboard points to, your sleeping position would not make a difference. Ideally, you should be able to lay on your bed and have a sight of you door, but the bed should not be right in front of it.

Must your bed be directly across the door, ensure that you have a high footboard or anything strong to have at the foot of the bed. On the other hand, if the position of your bed doesn't allow you to see the door, hang a mirror where it reflects the door and you in fact see it.

Feng Shui also puts significance on the view you get while you're on your bed. Surround yourself with dcor and anything beautiful. Bathroom and closet doors should also be shut. Certainly no TV in the bedroom. But if you can't sleep without it, put it in furniture that allows you to keep it hidden as the night goes deep. Pulling down the curtains and covering big mirrors at night also help promote better sleep.

When it comes to colors, Feng Shui recommends skin tones like beiges browns and yellows. There's also room for the pinks, redsand violets. On the other hand, other cool shades such as grays, greens and blues may not be that loaded in terms of the positive vibes that they can produce.

As for your bedroom furniture, a Feng Shui design does not call for any particular type. That means whether you go for an elaborate traditional set or simplistic modern furniture, it won't matter. A practical proposition would, perhaps, be to get something of good quality in keeping with the tradition of all things good and fine-looking in order to attract only the good energy.

Solar Energy Advantages and Disadvantages

By Jordan Iwase

Knowing the solar energy pros and cons is one of the most important things in deciding whether or not you should buy this source of power. The uses for solar energy are nearly endless, some of the most practical uses are: electricity, central heating, hot water and cooking

Solar energy comes from rays generated from the sun. Solar energy is extremely helpful for the environment. However, when the rays emitted from the sun enters earth's atmosphere, it dilutes quite a bit

We'll start with the cons. The biggest disadvantage of solar power is that it is dilute. This means you need several solar collectors installed around your home. Solar energy may be very cheap but the solar collectors are relatively expensive and require maintenance in order to work properly and efficiently.

Your house roof may not be at a good angle for collecting solar energy, which would make installation on your roof less effective or in some cases, not possible. This can pose a big problem for those wishing to convert to solar energy.

There are many benifits in using solar energy too Fuel costs are nowhere to be seen, since you use the sun's energy, you won't have to pay for costly fuels to keep your energy going This can shave off quite a hefty sum of money for your overall bill!

Solar energy is very clean. In order to produce heat or electricity to use with solar energy, you only need the sun's rays. You don't need to use harmful fossil fuels when using solar energy All you need for energy is a solar energy collector or solar power panels.

Fuel costs are nowhere to be seen, since you use the sun's energy, you won't have to pay for costly fuels to keep your energy going This can shave off quite a hefty sum of money for your overall bill!

Solar energy can be great for desalination of water, if you are in an area where fresh, drinkable water is scarce. Solar energy evaporates brine and leaves the salt crystals in the bottom of the basin. Water then condenses back into another basin, where it becomes drinkable.

Use Water Filters/Purifiers for Great Health

By Zachus J Winestone

One of the most important yet under-rated inventions of modern times is water filters/purifiers. They are a part of our every day lives yet we rarely even need to consider its importance. In third-world countries these filters are saving many lives. In areas where filtration and purification dont exist water borne diseases and sickness from contaminated water take their toll. While there have been countless initiatives taken to get more filtered and purified water available every where in the world, there are still people dying from water-borne illnesses.

The problem of water contamination does not only exist overseas but also in our own backyards. Even as I write there are thousands of Americans out there who are unaware of the potential dangers in the water they consume on a daily basis. Though many are skeptical about the water filter/purifiers hype it is indeed a potential solution to a growing problem. Recently chlorine based water has been linked to diseases such as cancer, heart disease, birth defects, and many serious illnesses.

Many people fall prey to the misconception that all water dispensed at home, is certified clean; and therefore healthy to consume. Though true, it is impossible to tell the purity of water without the aid of a microscope. The water distributed to our tap system still contains a variety of bacteria harmful to our human immune systems.

If your water supply is from a dug out well or from a municipal source then the dangers of your water being highly contaminated with sediments, bacteria and excessive chemicals is certain. Municipal sources recycled waste water for consumption and they are the main water supplies to most city dwellers. It is a fact that 90% of water in the United States has at least 10 different traces of synthetic chemicals and lead. So, if you live in the city then you may want to research your water source and find exactly how clean your water is. Today, thousands of households in the United States alone have taken some precaution against water contamination and installed a water filter/ purifier.

Some Useful Choices

Of the many different water filters/purifiers available- undersink, countertop, faucet and whole house filters are the most commonly used. Even though each filter uses a different method of filtering, the aim of getting purer water coming out of your taps is the same. The filters/purifiers remove harmful sediments and bacteria and deadly chemicals. Generally filters are affordable except for the more elaborate filters,. A whole house system provides great quality, needs little maintenance and fits most budgets, which is why this is the one I recommend. Don't look at water filter/purifiers as an expense rather as an investment in your health and well-being.

Solar Panel Tracking Systems

By Walter Hull

Tracking systems are designed to orient your solar panels toward the Sun. They will add an extra level of performance to your solar power system, for a little bit of expense and complexity.

The Sun changes daily, monthly, and seasonally the way it carves its path across the sky. Therefore the angle of beam radiation is constantly changing. The solar panels should be oriented perpendicular to the Sun at all times to best receive this radiation. A solar power tracking systems helps us achieve this.

The amount of energy gained will depend on your location and the type of tracking system used. We looked up the solar energy tables for the state of Washington, and the difference between a fixed solar panel system and one with tracking was ~40% more in the summer months. The spring months showed a 25% increase, and winter about 10%.

The simplest type of tracking is a manually adjustable one axis system. The solar panels are installed in a south facing direction, with a rotating mechanism on their horizontal axis. One can make seasonal adjustments to maintain the best operating angle for that time of year. A simple system such as this can gain 20% better performance when compared to a fixed solar panel installation. The Rotek design we use is an example of one such system.

To further boost performance we can add a control system to our one axis tracking. This is called active solar tracking, where the solar panels automatically rotate throughout the day. These systems provide the largest gains, up to 50% in the summer months. Performance remains good throughout the year as well, so for a little more cost they are worth investigation.

Two axis tracking systems are the most complex and most accurate installations available. With these systems, your solar panels have additional flexibility on their vertical axis (East to West). These systems are the most exact when it comes to following the Sun.

Two axis systems are commonly used with concentrating solar collector designs. These types of collectors, like a magnifying glass, focus the rays of the Sun. Systems with these installations require the highest possible operating temperatures. Examples include thermal power stations, stirling engines, and pebble bed transfer systems.

When it comes to using solar panels to generate electricity, a two axis system is not the way to go. They will yield a very modest 5% gain over an actively tracking one axis system. For the cost and simplicity, we recommend a manually adjustable or actively tracking one axis system.

The primary applications for solar power are with generating heat and electricity. A solar power tracking system is useful in either case. The more energy we receive, the more heat and electricity we can manufacture. It's that simple.

If you are serious about maximizing your solar power system, then you should be considering a tracking system. One axis systems are available that are effective, inexpensive, and easy to use. Two axis systems are more complex and normally used for high temperature systems. Either which way, a good tracking system will go a long way in getting the most out of your solar panels.

Costa Rica Property Investment

By Randy Berg

Property Investment in Costa Rica is a booming sector. Costa Rica welcomes people from countries all around the world to come here. The country of Costa Rica nestled in the Central American region was discovered by Christopher Columbus in the 1500s. This country comprises of a group of islands and was aptly named Costa Rica by its discoverer because of its extensive and rich coastline. Costa Rica is a Spanish name which when translates to English means "rich coast".

The people of Costa Rica, also called the "ticos" are very warm and welcoming in their attitude. This is what increases the beauty of this place even more. The enthralling landscape, the towering mountains and the regal volcanoes are not just what Costa Rica has on offer. Any visitor who comes to Costa Rica leaves with the dream of owning a property here which equals to owning a piece of paradise.

There are numerous reasons why Costa Rica is becoming a preferred choice for property investment. Costa Rica is a land beyond just sensuous beaches, picturesque landscape, lush greenery and majestic mountains. It is a land of happy and content people. The natives of Costa Rica, also referred to as "ticos", are warm and friendly in nature.

The various options that Costa Rica offers for property investment are beach properties, upscale residential homes, farms and mountain properties. Some of the places in Costa Rica where your investment in property will prove worthwhile are in the Central Provinces of Heredia and Alajuela, locations in San Jose such as Escazu and Santa Ana and places like Puerto Viejo, Punta Uva and Dominical.

Costa Rica property investment is also a good option because the country offers good infrastructure support like good roads, good Internet connectivity, public transportation, free trade zones, universities, schools, banks and good air transport. The weather in Costa Rica and the scenic beauty of this land ranging from the bountiful rainforest's to the volcanoes and the enticing beaches ensures that property investment is worth every penny here.

Costa Rica property investment is a good option because this place is also safe to a great extent, and offers peace of mind and protection to the foreigners who invest their money here in purchasing property. The government of Costa Rica has introduced many liberal economic policies that are in favor of the investors looking to invest in property here. As compared to many other Central American countries, Costa Rica has the longest and strongest democracy too.

There are certain points to keep in mind while investing in property in Costa Rica. The Costa Rica real estate market is a two-tiered market which means that there are different rates for the same property for the "ticos" (natives of Costa Rica) and "gringos" (foreigners who come for investment). The property prices quoted for the "gringos" are nearly twice the price quoted for "ticos". Hence, it is important to bear this point in mind and negotiate on the costs demanded by the seller for the property.

Another important aspect to note is that the legal process is completed thoroughly. It is important to have sufficient knowledge on how to get the property registered in your name completely and take over 100% ownership rights on the property. If you are not aware of this, it is recommended to take the services of a local attorney who can hand hold you through this entire procedure.

What Is The Proper Pressure For Your Pressure Washer

By Riche Goldmann

A pressure washer is a great tool for jobs around the house. You can rent or buy one depending on how much use you think you might get out of it. Pressure washers come in a variety of sizes for different jobs. This article will provide you with some tips on choosing the right washer for your application and also provide some advice on how to use it.

First of all, there are two primary kinds of pressure washers: gasoline and electric powered. Electric units are easy to use, though they are smaller and much less powerful, meaning that they can't handle jobs that are overly difficult. However, they are perfect for smaller jobs like car washing, the removal of dirt and grime off of your boat, and cleaning your outdoor grill. They are a good idea for you if you are less experienced with pressure washers, as it will be more difficult for you to do any damage to anything.

Another advantage to smaller electric powered pressure washers tend to be cheaper, and priced well. They are easily stored in any garage or shed and can be transported with one hand to any place where they are needed. As stated earlier, these kinds of pressure washers are perfect for you if you need to tackle small jobs on a regular basis.

The smallest gas powered washer has more power than the biggest electric one. The size of the motor determines just how powerful the washer can be. Other components are built to varying standards depending on whether you get a modest size residential model or a larger commercial grade one. These big commercial units are very expensive, so if you really need that sort of power for a job, you are better off renting it for the day.

Gas powered pressure washers are the perfect choice for big cleaning jobs like decks and vinyl siding. With a powerful unit you can wash your entire house, even the second story from the ground. You can also use these big washers to clean concrete driveways.

You need to be careful, however, because the washer is powerful enough to take off more than you intended with that concentrated stream of water. Professional painters often use pressure washers to strip the paint off the sides of brick and wooden buildings. Obviously if you want to simply clean the paint, you need to be careful. A big commercial unit can even eat right through concrete if you spray it from close range.

Every pressure washer comes with an adjustable nozzle at the end of the hose that must be adjusted to create the right shape and power of a stream. Pressure washers can be very dangerous, especially if they come into contact with someone. A hit from a stream of water from a pressure washer can potentially bruise someone and can even cause bleeding if the skin is torn.

So, before you buy or rent a pressure washer, make a list of the jobs you would use it for over the next year. The types of jobs on this list will tell you how big a unit you will need and the number of jobs on the list will tell you whether you should buy or rent one.

Thinking Of Lawn Maintenance, Think Of Using Lawn Roller

By Ferdinand Emy

A lawn roller is a peculiar sort of machine that is employd when sodding a new lawn. If you have ever placed sod on a new lawn you know how trying it may be to roll out the sod and make sure that it is placed rightly on the ground. A lawn roller is meant to make the job simpler.

Sod is considered to be the best choice for beginning a new lawn. Even though sod is more overpriced than seed, it will supply you with instantaneous effects and will also endow you with a fuller lawn than is more often than not possible with seeds. Using a lawn roller may make it easier and quicker to install the sod on your lawn.

Before utilising a lawn roller to install the sod, you'll require to insure that the lawn is prepared adequately. So as to do this, any existing grass and weeds need to be removed from the lawn. Sod cutters may work well for this purpose. Insure that you do a thorough job to ensure that everything is cleared. If you do not empty existing weeds or grass you'll have difficulties with them coming up along with the sod.

The next step involved in preparing the lawn so that you can use the lawn roller is to till the lawn. This is particularly crucial if the dirt is compact. It's essential to make sure that you till up the yard. You will then need to apply a good number of fertilizer also as compost.

After you have added the fertilizer to the topsoil, the next step is to till the fertilizer into the topsoil. This insures that the fertilizer is worked into the topsoil. You might want to employ a rake on the topsoil before you grab the lawn roller to spread out the sod. Keep in mind that the topsoil should be leveled completely. It must be completely level before you spread out the sod employing the lawn roller.

When you are ready to lay out the sod, you will utilize the lawn roller. Begin by rolling one side of the sod on the far side of the lawn. Next, you'll use the lawn roller to roll another section of sod on the opposite side of the lawn. The goal is to employ the lawn roller to roll sections of sod till you have reached the middle of the lawn.

Product Review of iH9 iPod Alarm Clock - The Newest Battery Alarm Clock of iHome

By Paul J. Easton

Meet the new iH9, the newest ihome battery alarm clock in town. This model is the all new and improved successor to the infamous iH8 iPod alarm clock radio.

This iH9 iHome battery alarm clock has a number of new features due to public demands. This includes the remote control for the iHome unit and the iPod menu functions, AM/FM presets, and EQ controls for treble, bass, and balance. It even controls the 3D sound for better audio experience.

The updated design has a sleeker cabinet, not to mention more user-friendly. The enhanced alarm settings feature the custom-your-own iPod playlist. This has the ability to let you set various playlists at different days with the 7-5-2 feature and the added programmable snooze settings. Additional features of this iH9 are: iPod, AM/FM Radio or buzzer alarm, universal dock (with inserts to fit various iPod models), and charges iPod while docked.

Personally, the sound is superb for a clock but it would pale in comparison and can never replace a real dock system. I am in love, though, with the tilt feature as it is really cool. This is because I watch videos on my iPod just before going to sleep. When I use the iPhone, I simply grab the clock and roll it to the left while the display rotates with it too. As with any iPod, the design style is impeccably modern and sleek.

Gardening Ideas for Container Gardens

By Dave Truman

People who are working with small sized gardens often find themselves at a loss when it comes to what to do with their small space. By applying some well thought out ideas to your small garden, however, you can make it something beautiful. Remember that small spaces can still include lots of variety in both types of plants and colors.

Making Use of Containers

If you don't have a lot of place to plant then containers are an ideal place to start. If you think flower pots are boring then think again. There are a lot of gardening ideas that you can utilise flower pots in a way that is interesting and colorful.

First of all, your pots don't have to be the same color. They can be several different complementary colors. Paint plain pots different shades that match if you want, or pots of the same color in different shapes and heights. Hanging baskets are also a great option if you have limited space, this way you are using all the available space you have.

The Right Container

Gardening ideas abound for container gardens, there are many different types of flowers and plants you can plant even with these little gardens. First make sure that your container has a good drainage system. Without good drainage your plants will turn soggy and the roots of your container will rot away.

Ceramic planters should have four or five drainage holes. Plastic and steel containers can have holes added to them with a drill.

You can even turn ordinary objects into containers for your garden. Whether it's an old trough, watering can, wellington boots or tin cans spruced up with paint. Your gardening ideas are limited only by your imagination. Line the bottom of baskets that you want to turn into containers with sphagnum moss or coco fiber, this will allow water to drain and keep the soil in your container.

Mums - Diving And Plant Propagation

By Thomas Fryd

By now in the East you should know whether your chrysanthemums are dead or alive. Some springs you cannot help but wonder if there is such a thing as a hardy chrysanthemum. Those developed in northern areas such as Minnesota are not necessarily any hardier but are merely earlier blooming and thereby escape the early Northern freezes.

On the other hand it may be a good thing for them to die because new plants growing on a single stem are usually better plants, provided they are pinched after each three or four inches of new growth to make them bushy. You will also have much better foliage clear to the ground than when you allow them to grow as a compact clump of many stems.

If you have never tried it, dig up all of your mums and divide them, resetting only vigorous new shoots, one to a place and about 15 to 18 inches apart. Do not depend on a hard woody little stem if soft, succulent shoots from the roots are available. Some people prefer to take cuttings 2 or 3 inches long and root them in sand. If the cuttings are made from the tips of the stems that are succulent, they should root in ten days and be ready to plant in the garden where they are to grow. But pinch off that tip bud after each few inches of growth to make it branch as much as possible. You can keep this up until early to mid-July.

Spraying far Scale

Now is the time when you should start spraying with Malathion or other approved pesticides for scale insects on your lilacs, euonymus, Pfitzer juniper, and possibly cotoneasters, firethorn, and others. Mix up the materials at the strength recommended on the label and do a thorough job of spraying all the twigs and branches as well as the leaves. Just to play it safe... repeat again in two weeks time.

From now on you will have to watch your step when buying roses, shrubs like the orange jasmine shrub, and other plants from places that are not nurseries, but are merely handling plants as a side line. Since they probably know far less as to whether or not the plant is dead or alive than you do, it is up to you to protect yourself when you buy one of those jasmine shrub.

If the wood on the branches and twigs is all dried out or shriveled, better leave the plant in the store. Actually from now on you are better off buying potted roses, shrubs, and evergreens or those that are balled and burlapped. By potted we mean those that are grown in pots of varying sizes. These potted plants have much in their favor for they can be transplanted from their pots at anytime. They are all ready to put in your car: they are clean so that they are actually more convenient than the old fashioned balled and burlapped plants.

Long Distance Moving Companies Quotes: Writing The Facts Down On Paper To Save

By Noelene Kahiapotis

When you are looking for those reputable long distance moving companies, you'll find dozens in your local phone directory.

As the long-distance moving companies have cut-throat competition, they tend to have almost similar rates and you are sure to end up in utter chaos if you start calling them all to find that one who is reputable enough to hire. If you are making a long distance move and looking for a moving company, you will need to organize and categorize the aspects important to you or it may get overwhelming.

Usually the information given by long distance moving companies regarding their services requires some thinking to interpret, but they will at least give you a quote for your long distance move. If you want to make the most of all that information you'll need a matrix of which companies offer which services and their prices.

Many long distance moving companies offer unwanted or unnecessary services way beyond of what your require. There are interstate moving companies which also offer storage facilities if you can't move into your new home immediately. You're able to choose the services you need, and pay only for the ones that you choose.

Make a list of the most critical services. It's important to properly pack your items for moving, and sometimes moving companies will include packing services in their original quotes. If you'd rather pack your own things, be sure packing service isn't included in the quote you receive.

Have you checked up with the movers about the insurance and conditions of making claims? You should decide whether you can wait for your belongings to arrive later or you want them to accompany you to your new place.

Your decision table should address all these considerations. Fill in the extreme right column of your spreadsheet with the names of long-distance movers and your service needs against the names.

As you receive long distance moving quotes from out of state moving firms, you can tick off the services they offer that fulfill your needs. By making a spreadsheet, it's easy to see those state to state moving companies that can fulfill all your needs and compare them to those that might not offer as many services.

Since most long distance moving companies base their rates on weight, you might also want to decide which things are the most important to take to your new home. Is your old dinning room worth the price of moving it even if you are emotionally attached to it? The cost of moving an old piece of furniture can sometimes be close to the cost of a new replacement piece.

After deciding which pieces you would like to move, several important factors relating to the long distance moving company, including D.O.T. approval, prices and variety of services offered, timetable of the move, and moving company insurance coverage can be reviewed by using your decision table.

Select based on your research the most focused interstate mover for your relocation. Making better decisions is a lot easier if you have everything planned out.

Using Renewable Wind energy For Your Home

By James Snyder

Just about anywhere you live you will find wind. Where I live the wind blow hard quite often but it is always moving regardless of how hard it blows. One of the fastest growing sources of power is renewable wind energy. We are seeing wind farms all over the country as well as wind turbines in the back yard of homes.

I have found that the wind blows everywhere that i have ever been. Granted some area are windier than others but there is wind every where. Since that is true then no matter where you live you can produce wind power or electricity by applying renewable wind energy technology.

The best part is by using do-it-yourself guides; even the least skilled handymen can build their own windmills and start using renewable wind energy to lower their electric bills each month. However, if you do live in a particularly windy area you can feasibly generate an abundance of electricity from renewable wind energy systems.

A good renewable wind energy system might have a number of wind turbines to build up a good amount of power. Of course a residential area could easily supply power with one wind turbine since too many would be over kill.

In many states, it is possible to sell the excess electricity you generate from your renewable wind energy system back to the utilities companies. Of course you will want to check your local laws about this possibility.

With renewable wind energy growing in popularity many local governments are passing laws allowing the implementation of wind turbine for both residential and small business use. Our local Meijers store has placed three wind turbines on their roof in order to help our community save from pollution and to conserve energy for themselves as well.

The very best part of integrating a renewable wind energy system into your home or business is the environmental impact. Renewable wind energy produces little to no pollution, no harmful greenhouse gases and no methane or carbon dioxide-which contribute to global warming. And of course the savings those homeowners can realize after their initial investment in renewable wind energy.

Building Demolition: The Different Methods

By Matthew G Smyth

The definition of demolition is the destroying or taking down of a large building or structure. A common misconception is that demolition means the same as deconstruction. This is false as deconstruction involves carefully removing any re-usable materials for recycling during the taking down process.

Demolition is a fairly straightforward process when it is only small houses of two or three stories that need demolishing as the building can simply be pulled down manually or using mechanical machinary such as raised work platforms, cranes or bulldozers.

For larger buildings it can get a little more complex as they may require a wrecking ball to be used. A wrecking ball is an extremely heavy weight on the end of a cable, like a pendulum that is swung using a crane into the side of a building.

Although wrecking balls certainly get the job done, they are rather a reckless method and it is hard to keep control over the building and the ball and without the right expert training they can be lethal.

Another demolition method for particularly large buildings is implosion. This is where experts precisely place explosive devices so that when the blow up the building is levelled to the ground in seconds. It is however the most hazardous demolition method and there are many risks involved.

Collateral damage is of course a huge factor to take into consideration when planning a building implosion. The explosives must be placed strategically by experts in order to destroy the supports only so that the building simply falls in on itself without debris flying everywhere.

Another danger that must be considered when carrying out a building implosion is that if the explosives aren't placed with precision, then the supports may not blow up evenly, therefore potentially causing the building to topple over on its side, greatly increasing the overall damage done to the surrounding area.

Although you may not have thought it, cloud cover is a key factor to consider when planning an implosion. The reason for this is that the implosion itself creates a shockwave that fires upwards and if the sky is clear, then the shockwave will carry on going upwards not harming anyone. However if there is low cloud cover, then the wave will hit them and fan out, breaking most windows in its path and probably damaging some buildings that are close by.

What most people don't realise about implosion is that although the implosion itself only takes seconds, the work that has to be done prior to it is can take up to six months as all of the interior has to be prepared and the inner walls have to be destroyed, as well as extensive studying of the surrounding area. Even though it is the most commonly remembered type of demolition due to its entertainment value, it is usually considered a final resort when deciding on a demolition method.

Refinishing: The Best Option For Old Hot Tubs

By Henry Evans

Got a hot tub that seems to be beyond maintenance and heavy cleanup? You might be thinking of going to the home improvement store and scout for a replacement. And there are good hot tubs that cost less than $200. Seems like a good deal, isn't it?

However, fishing for your wallet and purchasing a new bathtub might be costly, considering other expenses you might incur such as fees for the contractor, demolition, removal, landfill fees, tilers, and a plumber. Add them all up and you have a huge amount on your bill.

You can also do the refinishing process yourself if you want to save more money. Just apply some acrylic liner and watch as it does some wonders. But unless you know what you're doing, leave this task to the pros.

Old hot tubs that are made of porcelain, fiberglass, and cast-iron can still look as a new through refinishing, a process also known as reglazing. If you know how to do this, then do it with caution. Otherwise, you'll just mess it all up and pay more for remedial repair. Most reglazing are done on site, since most hot tubs are fixed to their locations.

With this in mind, most professionals are very wary when they work in a residential or private facility. You can expect them to be really careful with oversprays and messes that come with the job. As much as possible, they like to make a real good impression with the occupants.

The refinishing process includes filling of holes, cracks, repairing of nicks, and concludes in priming, sealing and painting with a highly durable, glossy top-coat of any color you pick. This is where you can add a little creativity in your bathroom by contrasting and blending the color of your hot tub with the other fixtures in the bathroom.

The rates for such service vary from contractor to contractor, but the most obvious and common denominator is that refinishing is much more cost effective than actually replacing your hot tub even with those tagged with a low price.

Front And Backyard Landscaping

By Stacy Jennson

Backyard landscaping is all about making your surroundings look better. When you do it right, it can almost become a science of planting, growing, constructing, and sculpting the area to look its best. All the elements need to be taken into consideration such as climate, presence or lack of wind, lighting, and overall weather conditions to beautify the areas around your house.

Aside from this, the landscaper must know a bit of the flora and fauna of the particular land he is to landscape. The plants he will put in the garden must be of the right type for that kind of soil. It must be resistant to the endemic pests in the area. It must survive that kind of weather conditions. And it must not be harmful to the existing species therein. After such practical considerations, then the aesthetics can come in.

A landscapers palette is replete with the colors of nature. Flowering plants come in red, blue, pink, yellow, violet, and all the colors you can think of. Leaves come in different shapes and sizes, as well as colors. There are trees, vines, and shrubs to fill up a yard and garden. Then there are the evergreen and the deciduous plants. Evergreen being those plants with year round leaves, and deciduous being those that lose their leaves part of the year.

The plants will be chosen for looks, as well as for functional purposes. Plants can help bring shade to a house, they can be of use as hedges and natural walls, they can help to screen out sound from a busy street or a noisy neighbor, and they can bring in the birds too. Landscaping ideas for a front yard put all these consideration.

For the landscaping of a backyard, on the other hand, other ideas come into play. The more practical use of space is to be considered in a backyard. Front yards are usually for aesthetics and for show. Backyards are living spaces. In a household with children, the backyard could be landscaped as a mini playground for young kids. A house with no kids and plenty of backyard space might consider a wading pool for a cooler house atmosphere. A young couple as homeowners might want an entertaining area for the occasional get-together with friends and family. A busy homemaker might want an herb or vegetable garden in lieu of the flowering plants.

Western Landscape Extras

By Thomas Fryd

In the West the landscape and garden cannot depend on natural rainfall to supply adequate water. So it is necessary to water artificially. There are many ways in which this is done. Long gone are the days of furrow irrigation, but... it does work well good where a garden is fairly level. Where water is available under pressure, overhead sprinkling is often used but more efficient methods are being employed like micro jets and drip irrigation. Still other gardeners use soil soakers and these water small areas effectively.

There are arguments pro and con about overhead sprinkling versus applying water at soil level. With sprinkling, the foliage becomes wet, possibly inviting diseases. Watering during the early part of the day so the foliage dries off helps to overcome this problem. One of the advantages of overhead watering is the fact that the water is warmed slightly before it enters the soil. Overhead sprinkling systems work better on uneven ground than furrow methods and mirco jet and drip allow you to directly apply the water where needed with lower waste.

Too many gardeners have the idea that a light sprinkling with the garden hose each evening does the job of watering the garden. This is a harmful practice. Enough water should be applied at each watering so it penetrates the soil deeply, particularly for our deeper rooted garden plants. This means running the sprinkler or irrigation system in one place until the soil has received an equivalent of an inch to two inches of rain. How do we figure an inch of rain?

The U. S. Department of Agriculture has suggested this formula:

1. Determine in how many seconds it takes to fill a ten quart (2.5 gallons) container from your garden hose.

2. Then multiply this number by the number of square feet of area covered by the sprinkler you plan to use.

3. Divide the value obtained in #2 by 240.

4. The figure you come up with will be the time in minutes required to water that particular area to give the equivalent of one inch of rain.

When do we decide to water again?

That depends on a lot of different conditions: type of soil, size of plants, weather, and type of crop. Or you can have a self watering plant containers to make it easier for you. With most of the garden crops, wait long enough between waterings to let the soil dry out somewhat. This allows the soil to become well aerated. Water more often on light sandy soils, and soils low in organic matter. Also, water more often during warm weather. Shallow rooted plants like strawberries demand more frequent irrigations than deeper rooted plants. To determine whether the soil needs water, dig down to the six to 12-inch level and examine the moisture. It is impossible to tell if the soil needs water just by examining the surface. Wilting is not a good indication of water needs, since frequently this may be only temporary, due to a hot day when transpiration of water from the plant exceeds water uptake.

Maintaining a generous supply of decayed organic matter in the soil also enhances water holding capacity. Mulching helps reduce evaporation and discourages weed growth. Summer fallowing part of the vegetable garden each year (a practice borrowed from strip farming) aids in boosting available moisture in dryland soils. Another important practice for the xeriscape gardener is to use kinds of plants that are most drought tolerant.

Crabgrass Season

Crabgrass seedlings will be showing in lawns about this time of the year. The pre-emergence weed killers should be used before the crabgrass seedlings germinate, if possible.

Build Your Shed Following Quality Shed Designs To Save Hundreds of Dollars

By Bob Blecher

Saving money comes naturally to me. I have always loved to build things myself, and one of the projects that can save you hundreds of dollars is building your own wooden shed using better shed designs. Doing a project like this is easier than you think and rewarding too.

Here are some things to consider when you are building a shed with shed designs.

#1. What is the purpose of your shed? You may just answer "To put stuff in.", and that is what most people use them for. But you can also use sheds as gardening centers, tool shops, or play houses. When selecting the right plan take into account the style and use of your shed.

#2. Is your plan complete? There is nothing more frustrating than starting a project only to find out that the instructions are lacking and you don't know what your next step should be.

Complete plans should always include both step by step instructions and detailed blueprint type drawings to make your project as simple as possible to complete.

#3. Does your wood shed plan include a tool list and a material list? Both of these things will save you time and money.

Hands down, one of the best ways to save money is to have a detailed materials and tools list. That way you know exactly what you need before you get started. Make one trip and get your project done.

#4. Be sure to check to see if you need a building permit. Shed often require building permits whether you are buying one or building one. Permits are generally easy to get. Just check to see whether or not you need one.

With these four steps and a good set of shed design plans you should be able to complete a wooden shed in just one or two weekends. Then you can start enjoying your extra space.

Slashing Expenses on a Garage Plan

By Smakke Benjamin

It is common knowledge that people today are very particular about their spending habits. Well, who wouldn't be since the entire nation is undergoing a recession that government analysts and economists keep on saying rivals that of the 1920's Great Depression era? Tightening belts has become the norm and not even the rich can claim that they are going through this period without feeling a tinge of fear and panic.

However, this scenario is not the end all of the average Joe just yet. If there is one good thing that came out of this mess, it is the fact that people have now realized the importance of money and the benefits of saving regularly. This in turn led to the long hours of deliberation among people on whether or not they should spend a certain amount to satisfy their caprices.

At the end of the day, if an individual has made the vital decision of releasing cash in order to renovate his house or garage, he should not be made to feel at fault. After all, it is his hard earned money and he will also be the one to benefit from such an improvement.

Here is a comprehensive insider's guide in saving money on a garage plan. Use them and see how far your money can go.

The first priority is to figure out the purpose behind the conversion of the garage. If the individual is a parent who longs to see his kids act responsibly, then it is indeed a fantastic idea that should be made into a reality. Though it requires letting go of some control, it is actually a wise decision since the kids will have an idea how it is to live on their own. They will be able to assert their independence and autonomy even if they just live a few meters away from you. Instead of wasting money and having them set up a living space in some stranger's apartment or condominium unit, you are assured of savings as well as their safety and security. One of the responsibilities that they should learn is how to minimize the use of electricity-consuming appliances. They could make a schedule and follow it to the last letter.

Since most electrical gadgets being released in the market today consume a large amount of electricity, the kids living in the garage must be conscious to turn them off or unplug them when not in use. Furthermore, they must watch out for signs of energy inefficiency that could cause the bill to rise to high heavens.

Another way to reduce your monthly bill is to use compact fluorescent lights. If you are still utilizing incandescent bulbs, it's time to replace them because they consume a higher wattage and don't exactly provide an efficient light source. If they are leaving the room, they must always make sure to switch off the lights.

If your kids demand electrical appliances, assess first if they really need it or not. Most probably, they are just indulging their whims. It is better for everyone concerned that they just use what is available in the main house.

Install only the minimal number of plugs that will keep the apartment garage up and running. A couple would be enough. Anything more than that is already overkill.

Lastly, be environment-conscious by purchasing solar panels to power your house. It may be pricey at first but in the long run, you can save up on your electric bills.

Thermal Solar Power Systems

By Walter Hull

The term thermal solar power refers to systems that convert solar radiation into useful heat. This is also referred to as passive solar energy. It is a different type of system from solar power electricity, and whose usefulness should not be overlooked.

Thermal solar power can be used in as many ways as you can think. Designs exist from heating up your hot water tanks, to industrial steam generation and everything in between. Many of these systems are attractive because of their low cost and simplicity.

For most folks, thermal solar power will be limited to heating up a hot water tank, or storing heat for the workshop or house. These systems are inexpensive to incorporate, especially when designing a new home.

Other possibilities exist with pebble bed heat exchangers, which are designed to store excess thermal energy. These heat exchangers give our systems some operating flexibility. With this reservoir of heat, we can consider different applications for our thermal solar power system.

These pebble bed heat exchangers can be designed into your floors, walls, workshops, or other places around the home. They can be used for household heating, greenhouses, saunas, and as air driers for clothes. We had one design whereby a user wanted to heat up a nesting area in their chicken coupe!

The typical operating temperatures for a thermal solar power system will range from 120F to 180F. We have technologies to boost these temperatures from 200F to 350F. Industrial grade technologies can achieve temperatures in excess of 700F. Most of us with fall in the hundred degree category, but for the tinkerers, mechanics, and home enthusiasts we may want to push 300 degrees for our special applications.

The solar collector is the most important component to a thermal solar power installation. A few different types include flat plate absorbers, evacuated tube absorbers, and parabolic trough concentrators. Their main purpose is to absorb solar radiation and generate heat for the system. With a good sized solar collector system, significant heat can be generated and distributed to multiple locations.

The lifeblood of the thermal solar power design is the circulating fluid. The circulating fluid is heated in the solar collector, and then pumped to all the system users. This fluid is typically oil, glycol, or water which is matched to the system temperatures and equipment in use.

Anyone seriously interested in energy independence should start with thermal solar power technology. The components are simple and inexpensive. If you could identify your climate as having reasonable amounts of Sun, then thermal solar power is encouraged to the fullest extent.

We believe thermal solar power to be a steadily growing market into the future, due to a growing awareness of energy conservation and reverting back to our natural ways. Thermal solar power is one good way to do this. The Sun is free, and we receive its energy each and every day. Solar hot water, home heating, and pebble bed heat transfer systems are simple to incorporate and easy to use. We believe their popularity will gain in years to come.

Storage Solutions For Your Closets

By Jane A Moore

My closets are a night mare and potentially a health hazard. Each time I open my front hall closet I raise my left arm in a defensive blocking maneuver. I had read articles on storage techniques and thought I was following some of the basic idea. It just wasn't working for me. I needed help and fast.

Times have changed and I have to admit that closet organization has become a fairly substantial industry. There are closet organization consultants and there are closet organization companies. If you Google the term hundreds and hundreds of web sites show up claiming that they can quickly help you redesign your closet organizational system.

I am now among the converted and I am proud to say my closets are pretty well organized. I started down the path of closet organization by looking in other people's closets. I started to notice that my most productive and time efficient friends had extraordinarily well organized closets. Was this just a con-incidence? It seemed that people who were organized with their time were also organized with their closets.

After stumbling across my sister-in-law's secret, I started to copy some of her ideas. I first got to work on my front hall cupboard which is the closet I need to access the most. I initially got some plastic shelving and some clear Rubbermaid bins. This initial step was very simple and cheap but enormously helpful. All gloves, mitts, toques, and hats, and scarves went into one bin. All slippers went into another bin. Just with the use of two bins, the house and closet felt less cluttered.

Since that time I have gleefully headed off to Canadian Tire or Home Depot every time I decided to add another closet to my list of organized closets. I have read many articles on the subject and I have contributed to many blogs. I have written in to housekeeping magazines and I have preached to my friends. My life is simply better since it became more organized and my life became more organized once I started to organize my closets.

The first step in organizing your closet is to be honest with yourself about what you really need and use. Once you have done this type of critical inventory make a bag of items to give to the charity shop. You do not need to hire a closet organizational consultant if it is not in your budget. After purging your closet, you can start with something small like temporary shelving and bins. Experiment a bit. There are decent and affordable storage solutions for every closet.

What To Look For When Choosing A Reliable Painting Contractor That Stands Behind Their Work.

By James Moore

A good way to begin looking for a painting contractor is to ask relatives, friends, or neighbors who have had a quality paint job done that has lasted a while. If you find one who was extremely pleased, ask if it would be alright to come have a look. Carefully examine the small things like trim work, eaves, inside corners, and ask about how the work surface was prepared. Ask if areas that were not to receive paint masked off and adequately protected. Were the workers constantly on time and staying on task or did they show up late and only work half days. Also, find out if a written warranty was supplied, and if possible, review it.

Your local paint store (not the local Wal-Mart) should be able to give you good leads to a reputable, reliable painting contractor who does quality work. Most painters buy their paint from a paint store, and thus you can ask about the painters who seem to pay their bills on time. Most of the time this means that they have done reliable work, and thus are getting paid on time. The same paint store will speak to you about what kinds of preparation you should expect, since the quality of the paint job usually is reflected by the preparation.

Its sad to know that some have spent hard earned money just to have the paint on their home peeling or flaking off in just a few short months; especially when it could have been avoided by just doing a proper preparation job. When paint substrates (fails to adhere properly due to a wet, dirty, or degrading surface) it is because the surface was covered with old loose or flaking paint, dirt, grease, mold, other substances, or wasnt clean and dry.

Interviews are important! Ask the contractor about pressure washing and caulking use prior to painting. What about priming, and if so what type of primer will be used? Is the painting contractor able to give you many references of happy users? When you ask for a proposal, is the contractor pleasant, and professional? A good quote details the approximate time the job should take, the preparation details (will it be pressure-washed, caulked, properly masked off to prevent overspray?), what kind of paint will be used, and how many coats of paint will applied.

Your written contract needs to have all of the above included, and also have expanded details like start date, material specifics, colors, and an estimated completion date. There should also be a clause for how any changes, payments, or cancellations are handled. Ensuring that the workers on your property are insured is very important. One way to handle this with minimal stress is to hire a company that has its own employees. If you have uninsured subcontractors on your property, and they get injured, you, not the contractor are liable. Plus if the contractor doesnt pay them after completion, you could have a lien placed against your home.

Just for a quick review, make sure the company you hire is committed to the preparation needed for a quality job, that they have your interests in mind, that they either hire employees or make sure their subcontractors are insured, and provide a written warranty. Follow these few tips to ensure you get the quality job you were looking for.

Keeping Your Chainsaw In Tiptop Condition

By Frankie Lee

The chainsaw is a a piece of machinery built for heavy duty cutting. But whether you will be using it or not, you must take good care of your chainsaw and keep it in good condition so you'll get your desired results every time you fell some trees and other chores that demand serious cutting power.

Among the things you need to look out for is the sharpness of your chainsaw bits. You can tell if the chain is dull if the bits get stuck in the wood instead of grabbing on it and pulling it while the chains slides through. Another thing you must know is that chainsaws throw bits of wood while doing its job, not saw dust. If you get fine saw dust, your chain saw needs some sharpening.

With regards to the chain, you should inspect the chain for any loose contacts or whether it is too tight or too loose. The bar should show no signs of bents, crimped teeth, and loose retaining nuts. Before using the chain saw, always check if the chain runs smoothly around the bar.

Always check the fuel system of your chainsaw before and after use and during its layoff period. You see, chainsaws use a mixture of engine oil and gasoline to operate. The ratio, however, depends on the model and manufacturers designs. This mixture can cause the fuel filter to clog, especially if you use your chain saw on a frequent basis.

The air filter should be taken out and cleaned regularly, especially after every use. Considering that chain saws always operate in dusty environments, cleaning the air filter is a must. Make sure the exterior of the chain saw are clean prior to pulling out the air filter. It is best that you clean the filter in a dust free location. You also need to replace your air filter often to get maximum performance, once a week if you use your chainsaw more than three times a week.

If you suspect engine problems, do not try to solve the problem yourself to save money for the repairs. Instead, let the professionals have a look at it since they have the necessary tools and expertise to see what needs to be done efficiently and quickly.

If you are going to store your chains saw for more than 30 days, drain the fuel from the tanks and use all the remaining fuel in the injection system and carburetor by starting and running the equipment until it stops. Next, drain all the engine oil and remove the bar and the chain. Store the chain in an airtight container filled with oil, while the bar should coated with oil and wrapped with paper. Also apply a rust inhibitor to the combustion chamber to make sure your chain saw wont be speckled with rust the next time you use it.

Things that Influence Output from a Wind Turbine

By John Ashbury

When you are considering installing a wind powered system for your energy needs there are certain important factors that you should bear in mind, as they influence the way your system will work. Although some people opt for solar energy sometimes wind energy is the smarter option.

The average wind speed is a factor that is a big influence on how much electricity that can be produced from a wind turbine. The more wind speed that you have then the higher the production of electricity will be. This means two things.

You will need to take into account the amount of wind that you receive where you live. If you receive lots of wind and often that wind is strong, you will know that using a wind powered system, or wind turbine, would be the smart choice for your energy needs. However, if you live in an area that does not experience much wind then you will not be able to generate much energy from the wind turbine.

The size of the rotor is another contributing factor. Small rotors might cost less but they are not going to be able to create and store much energy. That defeats the purpose of a wind turbine. It makes far more sense to spend the extra money and buy a rotor that is as large as you can afford as this will produce far greater energy output for your home. Cost should not be a contributing factor in this instance.

The height of the tower is another factor that makes a big difference of how much output of electricity you receive from your wind turbine. This is because a wind turbine collects strong gusts of wind to convert into energy. Slow movements of air up to 10 mph don't mean anything. The stronger winds are higher in the air and not so close to the ground. To get the most electricity you need to have a tall tower to capture the higher wind speeds. This will allow for more wind to be caught in the turbine.

Although you might be considering choosing to use solar power you need to remember that those systems are dependent upon the sun. If you live in a place where there are not many days of sunshine per year that system will not be the choice you should make. Even if you do experience enough sunshine, other factors can still prevent the system from working adequately, such as clouds, rain, snow and even debris. Also, most solar systems have panels which require electricity in order to operate.

Wind turbines, on the other hand, only require wind and the wind blows irrespective of where you live. The chance of you living somewhere where there is never wind is highly unlikely.

There are many things that are big influences on the amount of electricity that can be generated and stored with a wind turbine system. This type of system relies on these things to be able to function properly and put out the most electricity possible. When these factors are met then you have a very good wind turbine. These include a high average speed of wind often, a big rotor diameter, and a tall tower that stands at least 75 feet.

How To Clean Carpet Stains Using Household Liquids

By Nikki Rowd

Carpet stains are any professional cleaner's enemy especially if they are undetected and left to dry over a long period of time. Stains can damage a carpet; they can also promote the wreaking of various odors and the spread of all sorts of germs and bacteria that can prove to be harmful if not taken care of in good time and in proper ways. However, these stains are not far from being easily removed and you can do this just by using regular household items. Learn how to clean a carpet with these following liquids and you can save money from buying super expensive cleaning solutions.

Water

When it comes to fresh carpet stains, water is still the best solution. With warm or even hot water and a few paper towels or rags, this is the best way to clean up a carpet stain on a budget. However, this is only best if you clean up a new spill and not something that has been in the carpet for a long time (long enough to attract all sorts of bacteria and form odors). So after a new spill, warm water and paper towels is best to absorb and get rid of any liquids and small debris.

Ammonia

Another effective solution to stains is the ammonia. Here is how to clean carpet stains with the chemical. You will need to mix a tablespoon of the stuff with a half-cup of water first because ammonia alone can be very harsh and damaging to any carpet. Blot the mixture onto the stain and leave it there for a couple of minutes. Then, use a sponge and clean water to blot that area again and you will notice that the stain will now be absorbed into the sponge as it was loosened by the ammonia.

Vinegar

Vinegar has another use that has nothing to do with food: carpet cleaning. Here's how to clean carpet stains with this condiment. Again, this should not be used in its pure form and it is highly recommended that you use white vinegar. Mix a third of a cup of the vinegar with a two-thirds cup of water. Then blot it on the area where the stain is (this is especially helpful with beer stains that give off an odor). Then use a sponge and some water to blot that area again to absorb the stain and liquid off the carpet.

Rubbing Alcohol

With rubbing alcohol, there's no need for you to mix or dilute it in any other liquid. Rubbing alcohol is especially useful in removing stubborn and sticky stains such as ink. It will help remove the stickiness from the ink so that it can be wiped off easily. Rubbing alcohol can also be used to remove blood stains as well but perhaps a little water will be needed to help remove it further.

When it comes to carpet cleaning, there's no need for you to look beyond your household supplies. This is a great way on how to clean carpet stains minus the hassle of going to the department store and wasting time as a spill sets into your rug.

Helpful Tips On Bulbs For Inexperienced Gardeners

By Kent Higgins

Spring Flowering Bulbs

The last of the late flowering bulbs made their exit in May. Many inexperienced gardeners remove the yellowing or unsightly foliage. The bulbs from which these plants grow are specialized organs that store the food manufactured by the leaves. If the foliage is removed this important function is lost. Not only is this food important to next years flower production, but without it the exhausted bulb cannot produce new bulbs through division.

Foliage should be left on the plants until it dries up of its own accord. Even after flowers are through, watering is essential if the bulbs are to cure properly.

Plant Labels

In this day of plant specialization the identification of plants is very important. There are many different kinds of labels available. The label should be as permanent as possible and be lettered lightly. The method of attachment should be such that there can be no mistake as to what plant is meant. Information other than just names may be put on the labels. For instance in labeling roses it would be wise to indicate the color class (dark red, red blend, etc.). This helps immeasurably when hurriedly cutting for a show as it will save a great deal of time getting the specimens entered. If you visit other gardens to observe new varieties being tested, the labels will prove invaluable. In this gardening world today practically no one is interested in plants unless they know the name of the variety. There is no time like the present to begin labeling the plants in your garden.

Summer Bulbs

June is the last call for many summer bulbs such as canna, caladium, tigridias, nerine lilies, and gladiolus. If these can be obtained as potted or pre-started plants, particularly canna and caladium, the chances for success are better. These plants actually are all semi-tropical and grow better after the soil and air are evenly warm. Continue to plant dahlias for a source of late color in the garden. It is still possible to get dahlia flowers from seeds started this month. Many gardeners prefer the new hybrids because their smaller size makes them much more in scale for indoor use.

Insects Control

The bag worms will make their annual bid for the garden in June. These pests devour the foliage from many plants and trees, mostly conifers, and especially arbor-vitae. The control is Sevin or natural neem oil in spray form with soap or a sticker to make it adhere to the plant. Bagworms appear as small black worms (caterpillars) carrying a webby pouch with them. As they mature the bag is fastened to a twig and the life cycle is completed as the pupa inside this bag. Another pest appearing now is the lace wing bug, especially on pyracantha. They are rather small winged bugs with a very decorative wing pattern. As they are sucking insects, a contact insecticide is required. Malathion will do the trick on them.

Garden Lights

June is the first month when evenings are warm enough to enjoy the garden landscape at night. Check into installing solar landscape lights to dramatize your garden. In lighting, select only certain areas to light completely and subdue other areas with partial lighting. If permanent lights are not possible there are many styles of portable lights that can be used. Do not overlook the value of these for working in the garden in late evening.

And it requires only a single battery. These battery powered clocks are also quite energy efficient and you don't often need to replace the batteries.

So what are those types of battery alarm clocks are available in the market? Well, there are many styles to choose from. But the common thing about these clocks now is that they are quiet. The solid state movement makes absolutely no noise so you only get noise when you want it. The ring is also varied depending on your preferences.

If you want to get away with modern alarm clocks, then there are many alternatives. LED and LCD clocks are considered to have solid state displays. LED stands for light emitting diode and you cannot miss it. LED clocks are categorized as battery powered devices and must be plugged always to be useful because they consumes too much power, and they normally come in red, green, or amber in color. LCD stands for liquid crystal display and they are very effective power-wise. The only time you use an enormous amount of power is turning on the backlight when it is dark outs. The only drawback is that sometimes you cannot see the LCD display especially in the dark without a light source.

Furthermore, battery alarm clocks are already equipped with many features like temperature readouts, automatic time adjustment with built in radio receivers and other personalized attachments too.

Choosing Crystal Wine Glasses Is Simple

By Anne Durrell

Crystal wine glasses are made from glass that contains lead oxide. Lead oxide is added to the glass to increase the density. When the density is increased, the glass becomes shinier and more reflective. Crystal wine glasses often reflect a brilliant array of color.

The number of colors that are reflected from the glass depends on the amount of lead that is added to it. Crystal wine glasses are heavier than glass wine glasses because of the lead content. The amount of lead added to the piece determines the weight of the crystal.

Many people wonder why they find imperfections in their crystal pieces. This is due to the process of making the glass. Hand crafted crystal wine glasses often have seed bubbles that are visible in the glass. These bubbles are created when small pockets of air get trapped inside the glass.

Other imperfections include chill marks and slightly cloudy places. Imperfections are found on even the finest hand crafted crystal wine glasses. These imperfections are often only seen by holding the glass up to a light. They are not a sign that the glass is faulty, but they are more likely a sign that the glass was made by hand.

Since crystal is a soft glass, it is easily scratched. So proper care of your crystal wine glasses is very important if you want them to last for a long time. Crystal glass can be scratched by small particles of dust, sand and dirt.

Care Tips for Your Crystal Wine Glasses:

* To prevent the crystal glasses from being scratched, try to not carry a handful of crystal glasses at one time. It is better that the pieces do not touch each other or other items as well.

* It is also very important that you do not use harsh cleaners such as ammonia if you need to soak your crystal glasses. Instead, stick with a solution of mild dish soap and warm water.

* Most experts will tell you never to put your crystal stemware in the dishwasher. If you do decide to put it in the dishwasher, it is best that you use the gentlest cycle.

Giving crystal wine glasses as a gift is a fantastic idea. They make a beautiful addition to any collection. They also make great keepsake to hand down to future generations. With proper care, they will last for many years!

How to Choose a Chainsaw

By Frankie Lee

When you obvious need a chainsaw for the work ahead, nothing will simply do. The fact that the chainsaw possesses serious woodcutting power is a testament of that. BIf you are thinking of buying one, there are some things you need to consider. There are two kinds of chainsaws - the gas-powered ones and the electric type. Choosing between the two should be determined by your immediate access to either power source. Are you going to use your chainsaw in a lumber mill in the middle of the forest or are you planning to do some wood trimming in your work shed at the back of your house? Location is, obviously, an important matter in picking a chainsaw.

While gas-powered chainsaws offer mobility and power, they can also be bothersome pieces of equipment, since they run on a mixture between gas and oil. Mixing oil and gas and getting the right ratio can be a bother. Gas-powered chainsaws also produce huge amount irritating smoke coming from the engines, as well as being a noisy piece of machinery.

The electric chainsaws lacks the power gas chainsaws can offer, limiting its functions to small wood cutting jobs and backyard chores. Also, a power cord dragging behind you can be a bother. But they are cleaner, quieter, and lighter than its gas-driven counterpart.

When picking a chainsaw, think of the cutting jobs you have ahead. Are they heavy? Will you be felling great oaks or just pile some firewood? Gas-powered chain saws are recommended when it comes to heavy cutting, while most electric chain saws are designed for small, lightweight cutting.

Powerful chainsaws mean heavy chainsaws. Power comes with weight. You should work with chainsaws you can carry and work very well with. For lefties, it is best that they learn to work with chainsaws really fast, as most models are designed for right handers.

There are some other safety gear you should also consider purchasing if you are thinking of getting a chainsaw, especially those powered by gas, such as hard hats, shin guards, protective goggles, heavy duty gloves, non-skid boots and ear muffs. These protective gear minimizes the risks of accidents and injuries that come with chainsaw use.

Mulching Your Way To Beauty

By Keith Markensen

Mulching not only protects the shallow roots of Chrysanthemums from the heat but keeps the soil cool and holds the moisture. It protects the lower leaves from soil splashing when rain falls. Soil splashed on the leaves looks untidy besides encouraging foliar nematodes. Mulching keeps down weeds and cultivation is unnecessary. Any material that does not pack and permits air penetration is good for mulching. I do not like peat because it forms a mat on top and water enters with difficulty.

Feeding may be carried out with the watering program. Each two or three weeks is often enough to feed if the beds were well enriched before planting. I use a 5-10-5 commercial fertilizer, follow directions in mixing and apply soon after watering the plot. Fertilizer applied to dry roots will burn them. Some growers apply a two-inch top dressing of manure in July, repeat the process in August, again in September and that is the end of their feeding. They grow fine mums. Because it is trouble to remove the mulch and replace it, and because well-rotted barnyard fertilizer is not easy to get. I use the commercial product. In any case feeding should stop when color shows, otherwise the bloom is likely to be soft and of poor quality.

Some provision must be made for staking and tying by those who are growing the football size mums. I have used stakes, tying the plant to the stake as it grows. The stakes should be set soon after the plants are set but before the mulch is put in place. I have also used a soft stout twine. One end of the twine is tied loosely at the base of the plant, and the other end fastened to a strong wire strung along the row overhead. As the plants grew they were gently wrapped with cord. Both methods are good. One drawback to the stakes is that they must have storage space when not in use. The twine may be destroyed each season.

Pinching

Another important point is pinching and disbudding. Pinching is to force out new growth and control the number of stems for the number of blooms desired. Disbudding is removing all unwanted buds as they appear so that all nourishment can go into the number of blooms desired. When the plant is about four inches high pinch out the tip. In about three weeks two small branches should appear. These should be pinched to the tip leaves just like trimming houseplants leaves. The original plant will soon have four branches. If four blooms to the plant is all you want be sure to pinch off any other branches that may appear. If you want more blossoms to the plant, then let other branches grow. Remember that the blooms on a six blossom plant will be smaller than those on a two blossom plant. However, six or eight blossoms can be grown to a plant and still be six inches in diameter.

About September first, buds will begin to appear on the October flowering plants. The plants must be inspected early each morning (buds are brittle in the early hours) to keep all buds off except those desired for bloom or you can also trim your house plants. Choose the healthiest bud in the cluster at the tip of each stem and roll all other buds out with your thumb as soon as buds are large enough to distinguish. Also. buds will pop out in each leaf axil. These must be rolled out. It takes but a few minutes daily to keep all unwanted buds rolled out. I use the expression "rolled out" because it is so much safer and easier to "roll out than "pinch out.

The successful gardener must establish a system of pest control. I find that when the plants are given a weekly spraying with materials that take care of our worst pests such as red spider, aphids, grasshoppers, and the 12-spotted beetle, we have no trouble.

Storage Boxes: Selection 101

By Daniel Fisher

When space is limited and you need to store items you can opt for storage boxes. The units feature assorted shapes and sizes so they can hold practically anything. The downside is that the wide selection can also lead to confusion when picking the right box. This article assists you in making the right box choice.

Accessible store locations

A respectable supplier has more than one retail store. Customers can pop in and buy all they need to store items. Kind staff can help with packing your items if you can't manage it personally. The company's website lets you shop online if dropping by local stores is not an option.

Storing paper and photos

If you are looking for moving boxes to store important papers and photos an archive carton may be your best choice. The paper sizes these packing boxes can fit include A4 as well as foolscap. The storage boxes are durable and strong so there's concern about papers being damaged while stored. A good supplier's archive packing boxes have a hinged lid that won't fall off and finger holes that make them easy for lifting and carrying. The containers are a cinch to stack and are appealing, clean and suitable for use around the house or office.

Importance of large storage boxes and space bags

Large cartons also have their storage peak limit. You can then have a hard time keeping out-of-season objects like sweaters and blankets. Space bags can take care of this common dilemma. They are strong plastic bags with vacuum tools for sucking out excess air and sealing items tightly. If you store items in ordinary plastic storage boxes you take up 75 percent more space than you would with space bags. A decent supplier provides a wide selection of space bag sizes to enable you to store any item in the house.

Properly supporting your Topsy Turvy is even more important if you have kids or pets as they both like to investigate. There are two ways to make sure your hanging planter will stay hanging.

If you only have one hanging planter to hang then just make a trip to your local hardware store and buy a stronger hook. Make sure it can hold up to 80lbs. to make sure it's strong enough. This is a small thing that will make a huge difference between having your hanging plant hanging or on the ground.

The other alternative is for if you plan on using more then one planter.

If you are using more then one planter then you should consider building your own support system out of wood. Making a wooden frame should only take you a couple of hours to make and chances are you have the wood already.

Depending on how many planters you have just make a nice and simple square or rectangular frame to stick in your yard. It does not have to be exact, it just has to be sturdy. Homes And Interior Designs

By Pri Vag

The importance that homes, working spaces and leisure areas have on our lives, and on our wellbeing and health, is well recognised so it stands to reason that the more aesthetically pleasing these are the better. Interior design is therefore clearly an important part of the design cycle that should not be ignored or overlooked. However, it is still regarded by many as a luxury service purely for the rich and famous which is not the case.

There are numerous reasons to employ a professional interior designer. For some it may be that they do not have the inclination to take on a home project, for others it may be that they do not know how to style their property and need help with creative suggestions and ideas. However, there is also a financial benefit to employing such a service.

Designers save clients valuable time. With ever increasingly busy lives, it is very difficult to find the time to take on a home project, let alone project manage a full refurbishment on top of a demanding job and/or family life, and even if you did have the time, would you want the extra stress?

Designers have the skill and experience to look at space objectively to find creative solutions that many might never have visualised. Maximising the size, features and style of your property is of course extremely worthwhile should you decide to sell it. There is so much choice available to people now that it can often be very overwhelming. Designers have vast databases of supplier and retail contacts so know exactly where to source the perfect vase, chair, shower fittings etc. They also receive preferential terms which may be passed on to the client.

Items in the home are investments too and mistakes can be expensive. Buying pieces that improve the quality of your life and that you can take with you in the future are, particularly in the current economic climate, very wise choices.

You therefore have to ask yourself, can I afford not to employ an interior designer?

Outside - Think about installing low upkeep materials that make sense for your climate and area, such as fiber cement siding, 40-year shingles, and engineered wood framing.

Landscaping - Eco landscaping considers careful selection of plants, and focuses on water conservation. Use green landscape design activities, such as reducing the size of the lawn. Think about the correct position of trees to help shade the home and reduce cooling costs. Employ hardscape materials to reduce weeds and do away with the use of pesticides and herbicides. Use local plants and xeriscape techniques to stay away from the need for too much care and watering. Compost. Install drip irrigation systems and think about reclaiming water.

You may see that from top to bottom, you can look at your whole home indoors and out to look for possible improvements to make it more eco friendly. It's not too hard to make your existing residence a green residence. By making at least a few simple changes to enhance electricity efficiency, in no time you will see the positive results in your utility bills. Plus, you have the added benefit of knowing that you are doing more for the environment at the same time, and that always feels good.

Guys Ideas For Men

By Stan Ikiys

The Garage is a great place to go to get away from the rest of the house. Most guys love their garage and it is a place where they can work on their hobbies and do guy stuff. Part of your garage can be turned into an office, workspace, or a small gym if you have the room.

Garages are usually the territory of the man in the house because wives usually dont care what goes on there. If you want to use your garage as a place to hang out and relax, you need to come up with some innovative ideas that will help you build the perfect space.

A favorite kind of garage among homebuilders now is something called a tandem garage. This is where the garage is long in one part and has enough room to park two cars, one in front of the other instead of the usual side by side. If you dont want to park your cars that way, it will mean you have some extra room in your garage to figure out how to use. This space can be great for many things including a workshop or mini gym.

The extra space in your garage can be used for many things but using it for a game room is about the best. If you want a pinball machine or any real arcade game, the garage is the place to put it. The concrete floor is best for a big heavy machine and having it away from the house lets you make some noise without bothering anyone.

Other garage game room ideas include putting a couch and chairs in along with a flat screen so you have a real guys hangout to play some video games. Garages are usually the domains of men and putting a game room in a garage is exactly what any cool guy would want.

Quality Home Building Features To Look For When Building A Home

By Rod Friesen

Everyone has a dream of building the ideal home for oneself and family. The purpose of any home is to provide the maximum comfort level, as well as full protection from the natural elements and other dangers. The Quality Home Building Features To Look For When Building A Home would be a strong structure, proper lighting and ventilation, and features that would reduce the utility bills.

Your home should be designed in a way that lets in the maximum natural daylight. For that it is necessary to have the proper orientation of the house structure on your property. You should plan your house in such a way that the most lived-in rooms should be located along the south edge of the house, and the rest of the structure should be spread along an east-west axis. The important rooms facing the south will be bright and sunny. Generally people like to be in rooms that have natural light coming in from two sides. So it is better to design the room orientation, with windows providing natural light from at least two sides.

A building feature that can create a sense of intimacy or privacy is the height of the ceiling. In rooms that are more private, the ceiling height can be 7 feet. Rooms that are meant for small gatherings can have 8 to 9 feet high ceilings. Places meant for large gatherings and lot of movement can have ceilings that are 10 to 12 feet high. A higher ceiling can improve the air circulation in a house, but will also bring up the cost of heating. Many people feel the need to have a fireplace, and it is important have it in the right place and designed correctly. When a fire is burning it will usually suck the air for combustion and you will feel a draft of air coming through the openings in the window or doors. To eliminate this draft you can fix glass fireplace doors provided you have a vent, so that the combustion efficiency is not reduced.

Another important aspect that requires careful consideration is the flooring of your home, and you should consider the durability and the maintenance cost of the material you are going to choose. Hard flooring materials like marble, granite, tile and concrete, require less maintenance and are much more durable. These type of surfaces are ideal for living room areas and kitchen where the surface is put to a maximum of walking around and there is a constant spillage on the floor. Softer materials which are more comfortable on the feet like carpets can be chosen for bedrooms and study rooms. Another factor to consider in flooring is the safety. Hard materials are usually smooth and slippery, so you should get a finish which is designed to minimize the danger of sliding. Also carpets need constant cleaning and care, as they harbour dust and dust mites.

Always use materials that are low in volatile organic compounds, as this will improve the quality of air inside the house.

The Positive Powers Of Cubicle Feng Shui

By Ferdinand Emy

Applied to a regular work cubicle feng shui design could bring a positive switch into your life: there may be a better salary, a healthier body and a more rewarding personal life.

Thus, focusing a good energy flow in the entrance area is vital for the success of your business; this is the place where the energy enters the cubicle like a sanctuary and changes the visitor's perception in a good way. The work surfaces are just as important as windows, entrance and corners for the optimal cubicle feng shui design. Currently, cubicle feng shui redecorations have gained an incredible popularity in the United States and the Western countries in general. The clutter reduction is not positive only from a psychological point of view, as it also improves the flow of vital energy in the space. Therefore, the first impression one makes when entering your office will influence the business relationship in every way.

There will still be challenges and ups and downs to experience at work or at home, you just have to learn the lesson and move on as harmoniously as possible. Such accomplishments may seem far-fetched but they are the sheer and real consequence of the ancient art of energy-drawing space arrangement. Then, there comes color, an aspect that should not be overlooked in the cubicle feng shui decorating. Such aspects of cubicle feng shui design make the efficiency of work increase significantly with minimal effort. Though it may sound incredible to someone new to the principles of feng shui, the very location of the waste basket and the position of the lighting fixtures have a word to say in how harmonious and fulfilled you are professionally and personally.

Feng shui practitioners will often indicate the fact that a cluttered cubicle only makes you look for things more, and thus lose tons of precious time. Cubicle feng shui design eliminates the clutter, creates more room and lets you breathe freely while allowing you to enjoy the hours you spend at work. For business meetings and deals, feng shui could be ruining or enriching, depending on whether you benefit from the advantages of cubicle feng shui arrangement or not. Yet, do not consider the art of stimulating the natural chi in the environment as a cure-all or solve-all solution. Creativity also needs to be stimulated and you can achieve this by including some vibrant spot of color on the desk, on the walls or in a corner you lay the eyes on when working.

You may consult a cubicle feng shui manual or book in order to see how to integrate plants in the decorum too. Choose colors that bring harmony and a feeling of relaxation so that you may be able to work productively and efficiently.
