Roses And Its Different Varities

By Kent Higgins

Did you by chance prune your grape vines or maple trees within the last month or so and notice the resultant bleeding? Fortunately, although this seems to be a tremendous worry to us, it really doesnt harm the plants at all. Just let them bleed, it will stop in time. There is absolutely nothing you can do to stop it, as you will quickly discover if you ever try. Next year prune them in December or January so they have a chance to heal over.

Do you have any hedges that worry you because they are not compact and as much of a screen as you wish? Now is the time to do something about it. Unfortunately hedges that are open from the bottom from lack of sufficient branches will seldom get more compact by pruning only at the top. The only satisfactory way to handle deciduous shrubs is to cut them within an inch or two of the ground. This should be done immediately.

To help along the new growth, apply any complete commercial fertilizer in a strip two feet wide on both sides of the hedge using four pounds for each 25 feet of hedge. As the new growth starts, prune it lightly after every four to six inches of growth to get as much branching as possible near the ground.

Hedges that are too tall but otherwise satisfactory can be pruned back to the desired height. It is a good idea to cut them six inches to a foot lower than you wish them to be to allow for the new growth. The sooner this pruning is done, the more chance there is of the new buds developing just back of the points where the branches are cut.

Yew hedges that are too large can be pruned very severely and even though there is very little green left back of them they will develop new buds and fill in. However, other evergreens such as hemlocks, spruces, pines and even arbor-vitaes can only be cut back to the point where there is enough green left back of the cut to produce new growth. They will seldom develop new buds on the old branches. This is why the point is always reached sooner or later where hedges of these evergreens have to be taken out and replaced.

Selecting Tools

For those who are buying new garden tools, especially if they are new gardeners, it will be well to check with experienced gardeners to find out whats good and what isnt. Every year there is a crop of new kinds of tools, but surprisingly few of them are still on the market a few years later. Its still pretty hard to beat the conventional tools that we have been using through the years. Personally I still like a round pointed shovel with a short handle with a D on the end for handling soil and most digging. For planting and transplanting smaller plants I like a small spade with a blade only about six inches wide and a foot in length. They are light and easy to handle.

For a trowel, either aluminum or steel is best with a short shank rather than some of the ungainly long shanked ones that are so often sold. If you want a shovel, use a shovel and not a long trowel. Although many recommend a spading fork, mine is hanging in the garage unused year after year. A steel bow rake is still handy for leveling soil and digging up clods and removing stones. The only other long handled tool thats really convenient is a four tine pitch fork for handling trash and leaves.

If you have a vegetable garden you will probably be using a hoe, but in the flower garden, mulching should practically do away with the need of a hoe either the little narrow bladed onion hoe or the conventional hoe. And if you have to use a pick mattock to your soil, its an indication that you need tremendous amounts of organic matter and possibly coal ashes to loosen it so that it can be shoveled or spaded without a pick. Whatever tool you may buy, get the very best quality for they should be practically a life time investment.

Rose Varieties

Unless you are a rose specialist that grows 25 or more varieties, you will do best to stick to the standard dozen varieties offered by the average rose nursery. These are usually the best growers and best bloomers. Dormant roses can be planted most places throughout this month, but once the growth is started on outdoor roses, its better to use potted plants than dormant ones.

Your Own Agricultural Experiment station may have recommendations as for the best varieties for your state. Unfortunately these recommendations will not always agree with the claims for many of the new varieties. Because of the variations from state to state, I hesitate recommending specific varieties.

It seems that by now everybody should know how to fertilize their lawn, landscape and garden for it's so easy and so simple with the modern commercial fertilizers. Now is a good time to fertilize every square inch of your place, using any complete commercial fertilizer. It may have an analysis of 4-12-4, 5-10-5, 5-10-10, 6-10-4, or 4-12-8. So far as we know there is no great difference between one and the other as far as the plants are concerned. It is perfectly safe to use three to four pounds for every 100 square feet of soil surface, remembering that the fertilizer goes straight down through the soil and never sideways. This means that every square inch will get its few drops.

Overdoses can of course kill the plants, but at the above rates it is safe and if you dont tell the lawn, you can use a rose fertilizer on it and vice versa. And a vegetable fertilizer can be used in the flower garden and vice versa - the main thing is to get it on as soon as possible if you haven`t already done so this year. Fortunately every state requires that the analysis of the fertilizer be printed on the package showing percentage of the nitrogen, phosphorus and potash it contains.

There are so many fascinating house plants and annual flowers that have been listed in the catalogs for years, and yet all too few people are suffciently adventuresome to try them. Some that will give you a little something different, and yet not difficult to grow are the tassel flower (cacalia), calliopsis, candytuft, annual canterbury bells, clarkia, Chinese forget-me-not (cynoglossum) , annual pinks (Dianthus) such as haddemis and Zaciniatus, African daisy (dimorphotheca), annual gaillardia, godetia, cupflower (nierembergia), annual phlox, blue salvia (Salvia farinacea), flowering tobacco (nicotiana), nemesia, scabiosa. You will find these listed in all the larger seed catalogs as well as being on the seed racks in the seed stores.

Annual vines give summer color that climbing roses and a lot of other vines do not. In fact it is sometimes fun to let a single heavenly blue morning glory climb up into your climbing roses for mid-summer bloom. Some of the vines that you may be interested in trying out are the current popular varieties of morning glories. Other vines include the hyacinth bean, scarlet runner bean, cardinal climber, cypress vine, balsam apple and balsam pear. For a smaller vine better for hanging down than climbing, try thunbergia.

Essentials to Build a Chicken Coop

By Dana Goldberg

As we were growing up, we cannot remember a time in our life when we did not own any chickens. We have childhood memories of going out and feeding chickens. Each day, when we go out to feed them, we flash back to feeding them as a child. Sometimes, those childhood memories are something that one is really fond of. Do you have childhood memories like this? Do you remember helping your parents build a chicken coop? Chances are you did not know exactly what is going on. Now, here you are, sitting there wondering how to build a chicken coop. As we write this article, we are going to give you some information that you need in order to build those birds a home.

First of all, before you even get the birds, you need to take the size into consideration. How big do you want you coop to be? Personally, we believe it should be a big one. Many people opt for a smaller one simply so that they can haul it around. If you do not plan on taking you chickens for a ride anywhere, then opt for that bigger one.

For every bird that will be in the coop, you will need to have 4 square feet. In order for the hens to lay more and be stress free, you will need to make it big.

As you are positioning the coop, you need to make sure you place it where the sunlight is the best during the early mornings.

Before you start to build this big house, you will need to figure out where to place it. We highly recommend you paying attention to the morning sunlight and putting it where the sunlight shines bright during the morning hours. There is something about chickens and that morning sun as they absolutely enjoy it.

As for the materials list, you will not need a lot. Yes, you will need some wood for the frame as well as the nesting area. You will also need some wire mesh in order to close them in and don't forget about the nails.

If you are on a tight budget, then you could always use treated pine or hardwood. When it comes to the materials you need, it all depends on what you prefer.

When you have the frame put up, you may need some help when it comes to putting the roof on. At this point, when you have the roof on, it will be time to put that mesh wire up. No matter what you do, even if you have to put a ton of nails and staples through it, we highly recommend you not leaving any gaps between that wiring. If you leave gaps, you will make it easy for those predators to grab one of your birds. There are many predators out there that would love to have some chicken for dinner. In the end, you will find that building a cage is really fun. Now that you know how to build a chicken coop, it is time to get going.

Why Have Permeable Landscaping In Your Wilmington DE Garden

By Jim Carpenter

There are numerous contractors offering landscaping in Wilmington, DE but how do you know which ones are suitable. Certainly when it comes to selecting Landscaping Wilmington DE contractors a good idea is to ask family members or friends if they can recommend someone.

However another thing you can do is look at the kind of landscaping that they offer. If you want your garden to thrive throughout the year look for someone who offers permeable landscaping. This form of landscape garden actually ensures that the soil not only gets sufficient amounts of water but also air as well.

These types of gardens will be planted with large amounts of trees, plants, rocks other natural materials and some man made ones but will not cover the entire gardens surface. They will leave space between them giving the soil below room to breathe and collect water.

The problem with many gardens today is because of our hectic lifestyles many people prefer to have ones which are low maintenance. This is why many of them will use products in their gardens which prevents air and water from actually being able to penetrate the soil below. Items like paving slabs and patios are now common features in many gardens.

Having permeable landscaping in your garden has other benefits as well. One of these being that it actually helps to prevent soil erosion occurring as the plants and mulch through the establishment of good root structure. So the chances of it eroding away when it rains is greatly reduced.

When considering having this type of landscaping done in your garden by a landscaping Wilmington DE contractor you need to spend time with them planning what it is you want. A good landscape gardening contractor will be more than willing to spend time and listen to what you have to say along with making their own suggestions to meet your particular requirements. One thing they may suggest is the planting of several plants together which need quite a lot of water at any one time. Doing this actually means you have to use less water in order to keep the plants looking good and healthy.

Selecting the right trees, shrubs and man made or natural structures can also be of benefit to your home and your health as well. The right ones will help to modify the climate around it and this could drastically affect how much heat the house retains in the winter and how much remains outside during the summer. Certainly the right kind of planting around your home could reduce your winter heating bills by as much as 25%.

Using a reputable landscaping Wilmington DE contractor to help plan and then execute a great looking garden for you can increase the value of your home. Certainly those homes with gardens that have been well designed can increase in value by as much as 7.5 percent. Plus if you intend to sell your home in the future a beautifully laid out landscaped garden can actually make a sale occur far more quickly. Homes with great looking gardens spend around 5 to 6 weeks less on the books of real estate agents than those that do not.

Beautify Your Home With Amazing Houseplants

By Keith Markensen

In The Greenhouse

If you great pleasure in amazing your friends with big named plants, here is a good one for you - Graptopetalum paraguayense - and it makes an excellent house plant. It has succulent rosettes of leaves which are colored in shades of icy gray. If grown outdoors in the summer time in full sunlight, tones of rose are added to the grays. This plant is hardy only in the far South, in other areas it must spend the winter months indoors. A south window is to its liking... give it a menu of plenty of sunlight, a gritty soil and little moisture,

Each little leaflet will root easily if it so much as touches the soil, and in time a new little rosette of leaves will appear at its base.

The word philodendron was a tongue twister to all but the gardening experts years ago. Now this large family of plants of various shapes and sizes is widely grown. Some of the varieties grow so rapidly as to make them impossible for use in a small house plant collection... but there is one variety which will prove to be a delight to any window gardener. It is Philodendron scandens.

Its satiny green leaves have an overcast effect of reddish brown, no doubt resulting from the reddish undersides of the leaves. The leaves are small and heart shaped, not more than two inches wide and three inches long to the end of the long, narrow tip. The plant is slow growing. Give it enough sunlight to keep good color in the leaves, and to keep the stem from growing too fragile. Its soil should be rich, but loose and fast draining.

The prayer, or rabbit track plant, is a favorite for the shaded window garden. The commonly grown prayer plant is Maranta leuconeura variety Kerchoveana. It is called the prayer plant because the leaves fold upward at night like hands in supplication. The beautiful green leaves have bold markings of chocolate brown which remind one of a rabbits track. While it does have a small white blossom, it is very insignificant in comparison with the beauty of the foliage. A moist, porous soil, and a very light location (but not direct sun) on the window sill will create a happy home for this plant.

Marantas do not seem to take regular rest periods, but there are times when the leaves lose their bright coloring, and the plant dies down slowly to the roots. There seems to be no life left, and at this time the plant should be placed in a dark, and if possible, a cool location. Unaided, it will start new growth, but usually after a rest of several weeks. Keep its soil ever so slightly moist during this rest period.

There is something restful in a leaf combination of green and white, whether spotted, splotched, striped or marginal. In the summer time many Hower arrangements are given character by the addition of striped grasses. For winter time, St. Augustine Grass can be grown as a pot plant on the window sill, or in a hanging basket, and cut for arrangements. Botanically it is known as Stenotaphrum woundatum variety variegatum. It grows rapidly and in any exposure.

Buxus argenteo-marginata is a member of the box family of evergreen shrubs. It makes a useful house plant, and greenhouse growers find it especially worthwhile. This shrubby plant has tiny leaves edged with white, and at times at the terminal of each branch a solitary small white blossom appears. It may be missed, for its size is in scale with the size of the leaves.

Occasional pruning is necessary to keep the branches under control. It grows nicely without sun, is not particular as to soil, but does require enough water to keep the soil moist, not wet.

Outdoor plantings of plants with oddly colored leaves sometimes become confused and the individual beauty of a many-colored or oddly shaped leaf becomes lost. Foliage with unusual markings is at its best advantage in the window garden where plants are seen at close range. One of my favorite plants of this type is the begonia Dancing Girl.

Dancing Girl is of the angel wing group of begonias, and it grows into a compact, medium sized plant, ideal as a window sill plant or for home greenhouse. Individual leaves of this plant have little in common all of them are sharply pointed, but there the similarity ends. No two seem to be alike. Some are fluted, others almost flat. The greatest variation is in the silver markings on the leaves. There are dots and splotches of silver""some leaves are green with silver markings, and others are silver with green veins.

I grow this begonia in a sunny south window during the winter months, and when the sun becomes hot, I move it to an east window where there is v some shade provided by a thin curtain. Begonias like a spongy soil that is rich in organic matter. I use a mixture of clean, sharp sand, coarse peat moss, good garden loam, and well rotted leaf mold. These are mixed in equal parts, except I like to add an extra bit of leaf mold.

Dancing Girl has bright red flowers which come freely during late winter and spring. It can be summered out" doors in a protected, shaded place.

Candle Lanterns - How To Use Them To Decorate Your Home

By Candace Dogood

No longer are candles just used for lighting your house when the power goes out. In our world today, candles have taken on a much more pleasing and inviting task. They are now being used as part of the overall decor of the house and can improve any room that they are used in.

In order to understand how candles are used in everyday decor, it is helpful to understand the types of candles that are available. Candles come in many shapes and sizes. There are votive candles, tealight candles, tapered candles and last but not least, the pillar candles. In addition to the different shapes, candles come in pretty much every color combination you can imagine.

Another thing that can set one candle apart from another is the inclusion of objects such as leaves, sands and shells that can help the aesthetic appeal as well as the scent that the candle emits when burned.

Differing scents also distinguish one candle from another. The candle may have vanilla sticks embedded in it which produces a sweet vanilla smell. Other scents such as different flowers and fruits can also be included in a candle.

Another thing to be aware of is the space in your home and where you intend to place the candle. This will decide what type of candle you wil lbuy.

You may decide the perfect place for your candle is on the top of a table. If this is the place you want your candle to go, you will then need to buy an accessory such as a candelabra, candle plate or other type of candle holder. However, if you plan to mount it on a wall, then you will want to purchase a candle lantern to help support it.

The candle lantern can be made of any durable material. From metal, to crystal, to wood these materials are all common in any candle lantern. All of the candle lanterns are available in different designs and shapes which will fit your unique style.

When deciding where to place your wall candle lantern, you will not lack for places to put them. You could use them to light up an area or hallway or you could use them to highlight a painting or statue. However you use them, you will want to use them to light the way or highlight a work of art.

As you look around your home to figure out where the candle lantern could go, you will find yourself coming up with more and more ideas for where they can go. Narrowing down these choices will enable you to decide what types of candles to buy and what types of candle holders you will need.

More and more people are turning off their lights and lighting their homes with candles in order to return to a time gone by. If its a throw back evening to the time before electricity or simply a bubble bath after a long day, candles are your source for that comfort.

How To Make A Solar Powered Pump Birdbath

By Tim McDonald

If you are thinking of doing a few upgrades to your garden, have you ever thought of getting a solar powered pump birdbath? In fact, why buy one, when you can make it?

So why would you want to make a solar powered pump birdbath?

The Advantages Are:

a: Fountains circulate the water, keeping the bird bath from going stagnant

b: The fountain is wireless and does not have to be plugged in

c: The pump works on direct current, so no inverter is required

d: The pump uses minute power (only 6volts) so very few solar panels are needed

e: No batteries are required, since the pump only really needs to operate during the day when the sun is out and the birds are in the garden.

f: You can save more money by making the entire birdbath and fountain yourself, even the solar panels.

g: The birdbath is wireless making it very portable.

So, what do you need to make your own solar powered pump fountain?

The easiest way is to simply buy a birdbath with a pump and fountain already fitted. Then all you need to do is wire up some small solar panels.

The cheaper, more labor intensive approach would be to get a birdbath with the right holes drilled for the fountain to be installed. And then add on the pump, fountain attachment, irrigation and power supply.

If you decide to make your own fountain, you will need:

A Birdbath

There are a variety of birdbaths to choose from - cascading, copper, terracotta, resin, or ceramic. It does not matter what you get, just as long as it is ready for a fountain to be installed.

The Fountain Spout:

This is optional, but it makes the water spout out the top, instead of just trickling out. It can be found at your local nursery or hardware store.

Small DC Pump:

Depending your birdbath size, the volume of water to be pumped and how high you want to pump it, will help you decide on the voltage and size pump needed. For your average, medium-sized birdbath, a small 6 volt DC pump will suffice.

Tubing for irrigation:

This tubing generally should be narrow enough to keep the water pressure high, so that the water can be pumped properly. My advice would be to visit the nearby garden center and have a look at what piping is used.

Silicon Sealant:

This is one of those essentials that you should already have lying around the house. It will help seal all those joins and also protect electrics from water damage.

Solar Panels:

This is what sets this off-grid system apart from conventionally powered birdbath fountains. The pump will help determine how many solar panels you need. For a 6 volt DC pump, you will need at least a 6 volt solar panel, but rater double up on the solar panels for times when the sun is weak.

NB: For the solar panels, there are two options:

1 : Buy a small commercially available solar panel from any outlet, such as Wallmart.

2: Make your own solar panel. This is actually much easier than people make it out to be. With the right instructions you could build your own panel in an afternoon. If you want to go the diy way, then keep reading...

To get the maximum sunlight, the solar panels need to be fixed in simple frame, and be south-facing (if you are in the northern hemisphere).

How simple is it to build?

With the right tools and parts and a the right attitude you could have a fully functional solar powered pump birdbath in an afternoons work. It really depends on your level of experience, but many of our friends (even housewives) have managed to make their own fountains.

A nice added extra is to hook up some batteries to the system. That way you can store any excess power, and the pump could run all day and night. If you do want the fountain to operate for 24 hours, then you will need the following:

1) 12 volt battery:

Because the pump is only 6 volts, a 12 volt battery is more than enough. It should be a deep cycle battery (car battery) that can store the power for a longer time.

Charge Controller:

It is not vital , but if you want the battery to last longer, a charge controller will protect the battery from over-charging. It is wired from the solar panels and then to the battery.

Over and above it being affordable to build, what I like about putting together my own solar powered pump birdbath, is that once the first one is finished, making the second or third one just gets easier. It could even be a fantastic gift for a close friend or newly wed.

How To Work Out Your Home's Solar Panel Watt Requirements

By Tim McDonald

With green living becoming more and more important, many people are starting to install home solar power to supplement their power, and reduce their electric expenses.

But before you install a home solar power system, how many panel will you need in order to say reduce your utilities by half? And how much will you have to invest in the system?

Here is a simple 4-step formula to help you calculate your home's solar panel watt requirements and costs:

1 - Calculate Daily Power Used:

Your first step is to work out the average daily kilowatt hours (kWh) used. This can be done by looking back at your last twelve months power bills, and see how much power used per month, and get the monthly average. This will give you a better estimate of your average power needs by eliminating the effect of the seasons. It is calculated by adding up all 12 bills and dividing the total power used by 12. If you do not have the the past year's bills, then look at your most recent one.

Then divide your monthly usage by 30 (the average number of days in a month, to get your daily power used.

- So for example: If you have a monthly power consumption of 800 kWh, then your daily amount is 800/30= 26.7 kWh per day.

- So to reduce your electricity bill to half, 26.7/2 = 13.4 kWh of solar power per day is needed.

2 - Work Out Your Solar Panel Watt Requirements:

Before you can work this out, you need to find out how many usable hours of sunlight your region gets per day. A simple way to find that out is to have a look at an insolation map - there is one available on our website, where the original article was posted.

Now take the average daily kWh calculation and divide that by the number of daily usable sunlight hours, then multiply that by 1.25 (to take into account the wasted energy from wiring, charge controllers. batteries, and inverters).

- Continuing from our example: Our solar panel watt needs equal:

13.4 kWh / 5.5hrs x 1.25 = 3.045 kW or 3045 Watts per day.

This tells us that our solar panels must be capable of producing at least 3045 Watts of electricity.

3 - Calculate Solar Panel Watt Costs:

Now you you need to calculate how much these solar panels will cost you. At the moment $4.85 per Watt is the highest average cost in the United States.

- Continuing with the same example, the cost of the solar panels will be 3045 x 4.85 = $14,768. This is only to reduce our power bill by 50%, and it is before the costs of charge controllers, inverters, batteries, and electricians.

4 - Subtract Tax Rebates And Subsidies:

Before thinking that your solar power investment is going to be $14,768 to only halve your power bill, you need to subtract any tax rebates and subsidies on offer.

2009's Federal renewable energy tax credits came into effect from the beginning of the year, and coupled with the state-side incentives in places like Connecticut, California, New York and New Jersey, the cost of the solar power system will be much less.

- Using the same example: For a Californian to buy the solar panels, they would receive a state tax rebate of 20% of the cost, and a federal tax subsidy of 40% of the remainder. So, the investment in the solar panels would only be:

$14,768 - $14,768 x (20%) - $14,768 x (1 - 20%) x 40% = $7,089.

A word of warning: The formula outlined here will give a rough estimate of what you can expect to pay for your solar panel watt needs. Obviously the costs will differ with regard to special offers, the state you reside in and the contractor you use to install the system.

But, from our example it would cost a Californian about $7089 to invest in solar panels that can reduce his electricity bill by only 50%. We, on the other hand, know how to source cheaper and even free solar cells, and build our own solar panels, which makes the cost MUCH lower. If you are a DIY fanatic then it would save you a lot of money if your bought a solar power guide that show you how build your own solar panels.
