Purify Tap Water or Suffer The Consequences

By Derek Reeve

You might want to leave the question of how to purify tap water to the experts. Of course, in emergency situations, like floods and other natural disasters, boiling or bleaching may be necessary, but on a daily basis, the average home owner can do little, on his own, to improve what the public treatment facilities have already done.

Thats not to say that daily home purification measures are unnecessary. Technological advancements allow homeowners to remove traces of chemical contaminants and other impurities that public facilities cannot remove. In fact, some of the health threats in our waterlines are CAUSED by the efforts that they make.

If you are unaware of the different types of bacteria in your water supply then you will need to know that there are contaminants called THM's that can be found in water that is high in levels of Chlorine. If you have your own swimming pool at your home you will notice that left untreated a pool will turn green. This is algae and bacteria that are in the water and the only way to rid yourself of them is by putting chlorine in the water.

There are a lot of different types on water treatments systems that are out there today that can removes these types of impurities. You will need a technologically advanced system, because even granular carbon will not stop all the THM's in your water.

Researchers have proven this, by comparing the number of cases in homes where private wells are used and disinfection is unnecessary to those homeowners that are serviced by public treatment facilities. Its interesting to note that some of the best-selling and most highly advertised purifiers on the market (Brita and PUR for example) will not reduce the THM content, even though they reduce chlorine. And, that is simply illogical.

The most effective way to reduce, or stop chlorine is to make sure that you use granular carbon. Granular block however is probably the most effective system on the market at getting rid of chlorine.

Cysts are in some cities public water supply and you have to be careful. The US Environmental Protection Agency has made public statements concerning the presence of cysts in water supplies.

If you havent heard of them, these bugs, for lack of a better word, cause illnesses that can be deadly in some individuals. They will simply make the average person sick for a day or two. Facilities cannot test for them on a daily basis, as daily testing is considered unfeasible. Levels are higher during the spring and summer months, lower during the fall and winter. So, heres how to purify tap water that is likely to contain cysts. Chlorination does not work

There are so many different methods of water filtering that are out there, that sometimes it can be confusing and even frustrating trying to find one that works. You can always boil everything that you drink however, what that does is release chemicals into the air from the vapor in the water that can also be consumed airborne as well. You can set yourself up with reverse osmosis, or a sub micro filtration process also.

So now that you know how to properly filter your water, its time for you to take the step forward to a cleaner, healthier home.
